Vista RAM
« on: March 02, 2008, 09:56:00 am »

Is there anything I can do to take back my RAM from Vista? It eats up RAM like carp eat up fisherdwarves. I need 512MBs to run Medieval II: Total War, but out of 766MBs Vista uses 429MBs and leaves no more than 20MBs free (somebody walk me through that math). Supposedly, SuperFetch releases the RAM it's got in a deathgrip when I need it, but it's more likely a consipiracy to make you buy more RAM!

Microsoft: Greetings gamer. All your RAM are belong to Vista.
Fenrir: What you say?!
Microsoft: You are headed for a system lock-up. You have no chance to play Medieval II: Total War make your time.

I want mah RAMs back!

Im afraid Halmaloc is right, your only decent option is to go back to xp, though i remember in xp you were able to (with quite a bit of effort) remove certain things from windows to speed it up for gaming but im not sure if this is possible for vista (though i assume it is cos vista is just xp + flowers) but it would be much easier to legally download xp from say a legal torrent site    ;)

edit: oh actually you could always make it a dual boot system so you can choose to start up with either vista or xp depending on what you are wanting to do, it isnt that hard if i remember right(requring a new partition perhaps?).

edit: PARTITION NOT PERTIOTION *face palm*

Money's rather tight, and I'm not too keen on buying a new operating system just to run Medieval II. What about the metric ton of services that are running in the background? Which can I safely disable?

Unless you have a weird mobo, you should be able to find like a gig of RAM for about $20 - $30 (DDR2, that is.) Other than that you have no real option except XP.

You know, the internet is quite the handy place to get these kinds of things.

It's not like you're stealing, you didnt ask for vista..

Really funny. I was just waiting for a comment like this.
I was talking about services. I know which processes I can safely disable.

@Torak: I don't want to download an OS that's full of ad/spam/mal/crapware.

Hey just did a quick google and found this http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2110596,00.asp
didn't have time to read it all but it seems to cover the disabling of most unnecessary features. Sorry in advance if it ain't useful.

p.s. In relation to not wanting a download of xp as it may contain malware ect i would advise you read the comments left about the torrent as there are some people (with more free time than I) who go and download torrents just to check if there clean but i guess some may be lieing in order to get you to download there custom dirty windows.

meh end of ramblings.

If I remember right, Vista uses a lot more RAM than it needs to because it's basically storing program information for programs you use a lot.   When you need that RAM for other stuff, it frees it up.

Superfetch uses up unused RAM and supposedly gives it back, but obviously something is taking up my RAM, because I have more than enough. If Superfetch uses unused RAM, why doesn't it use all of the unsued RAM?

I have 3Gb in m Vista desktop.  When I bought it I had 1Gb and it barely chugged along.

I work for one of the major PC retailers and it's kind of a given(in the retail side of things) that you need at LEAST 2Gb on a Vista PC for it to run properly.  On a side note you can pick up a 1Gb stick of ram for 30-40 bucks if you look around normally now.

And that is why we hat Microsoft updates, in all their forms.

I love my little Linux dual-boot option...  I'd love it even more if any games actually ran on Linux, without the need for a firm grasp of how to work Linux, which I do not have.

If I could choose an OS to master, I'd have to choose Linux or one of the other ones of that breed.  Windows is simple enough to plug away at, but the freedom allowed to a master of Linux...  Dayumn.
