Uniform fails
« on: February 28, 2015, 12:24:58 am »

I've been trying for two days now and I'm losing my patience...

I prepared everything for my first squad: I forged a helmet, gauntlets, greaves, high boots, mail shirt, shield and chestplate for every squad member, a backpack, a waterskin, a pair of gloves and a pair of socks all freshly made. Then I created my squad and assigned the uniform. I set it to replace regular clothing and to stay uniformed when off-duty.

But my dwarves are idiots.

They equipped the helmets, body armor and shields just fine, took their backpack and waterskin. And then put on 0-2 of their gloves, 0-2 of their socks and 0-2 of their high boots. I fiddled around with removing and re-applying the items in question, but it gave mixed results - one dwarf who had everything equipped except the boots took off one of his socks when I added the boots to his uniform (and did NOT put on the boots), for example.
Also, there are TONS of gloves lying around, I can see them in the stocks screen too, but the dwarves won't use them for uniform and they are missing from the "specific item" uniform selection screen. The bin is just sitting there, not being hauled, not forbidden. What gives?

Another squad was to be equipped with crossbows. I assigned 150 wooden bolts for training (6x 25) and 150 metal bolts for combat. Everyone went and took a stack of metal bolts. That's it. I then removed the metal bolts from the assignment, and they just kept them. After I changed the metal bolts from "combat" to "training" they used them, and after they had used up the stack I changed it back - they took wooden bolts now and continued.

Is the equipment system just FUBAR?

I don't know socks, but you can't wear gauntlets and gloves at the same tme.
Also do check if your dorfs have either mining, hunting or wood cutting enabled, because those jobs have their own uniforms so you'd better move those jobs from your military.

What I use for my regular squad:

mail shirt
breastplate
helm
gauntlets
greaves
high boots
shield
weapon

That's not what the wiki says: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Armor
According to that, I should be able to wear gloves and even mittens under gauntlets, as well as socks under boots. I've already seen dwarves wear several layers on each body part, including hands and feet, and I also have had a squad member wearing everything except the boots.

I'm 100% sure you can't. Because none of my dorfs wear gautlents and helm while choosing over clothing.

Quote form the wiki:

Quote
Gloves
1 x pairs of gauntlets
1 x pairs of mittens

Gloves (cheap)
2 x pairs of gloves
1 x pairs of mittens

Edit*
Oh, I see.
Maybe that is because my dorfs have both gloves and mittens so they can't wear gauntlets....

FUBAR confirmed:
Quote
It appears that equipping footwear on one foot can affect what can be equipped on the other. For example, if a uniform calls for socks and high boots, a dwarf will only equip 3 of those 4 items between both of his feet.
Probably the same for hands.
But that still doesn't explain the mystery of the visible invisible gloves and the sticky metal bolts.

But that still doesn't explain the mystery of the visible invisible gloves and the sticky metal bolts.

■If a squad is set to use two different materials of a certain kind of ammunition one for practicing, and one for combat, (an example of this would be metal bolts for combat and bone/wooden bolts for practicing.) Oftentimes the most expensive kind will be grabbed and stored inside a quiver, the dwarf then being unable to practice with the ammunition will be stuck on "Archery practice" and stand around doing nothing. Workarounds for this include only assigning one type of bolts at a time when in combat or training mode. Only assigning bone/wooden bolt and nothing else, or assign metal bolts and nothing else.

That makes sense, but shouldn't he return the ammo to the stackpile if I un-assign it? I tried forbidding the bolts or dumping them, but he won't let go of them until he has finally used them up.

Yeah, I noticed that before. At first I thought they don't have enough training ammo. How about dumping the bolts? I notice they don't drop forbidden items.

Anyway I don't use marks too often, they can hardly kill anything on their own. Crurrently my squad of 10 are professinal kea shooter and use any bolts available.

I've given up on mixing clothing and armor, and just assign armor pieces plus a cloak (it's said cloaks provide some face protection not provided by armor), because the dorfs stuff it up when clothing gets into the mix, as well as causing them to desert to pick up new stuff more often.
Mixed ammo, or even a reasonable number of bolts, doesn't work currently, and marksdwarves charge suicidally with a wildly swinging crossbow when they run out of bolts, refuse to move even a single tile to get into range to instead sneak off to train when ordered to attack, so their value is questionable.

Well I don't use clothes because they won't replace worn uniforms.
Although I can let them switch between two similar uniforms and drop the old junks, but that is just inconveniet.

... And then put on 0-2 of their gloves, 0-2 of their socks and 0-2 of their high boots.
Make sure you are assigning the right number of items. "Metal footwear" adds a *pair* of boots; adding two "metal footwears" assigns two pair, which can't both be worn, might cause conflicts which stop them from equipping other footwear, and reserves boots that would have otherwise been assigned to a squadmate.

Also, shoes conflict with boots (due to size restrictions); make sure your dwarves aren't wearing shoes.

If your dwarves are already wearing gloves, then assigning them more gloves would prevent them from equipping gauntlets, and double-socks block boots too.

In general, assigning clothing in a uniform is not recommended.

Well I don't use clothes because they won't replace worn uniforms.
If you toggle your dwarves back to "over clothing" after they're properly armored, they'll automatically add any non-conflicting clothing, and replace it as necessary, just like civilians.
