I still dont see why the landlord opted for poison instead of traps. 

Traps can be reused when properly cleaned. If he has multiple flats he "maintains", the traps are by far the more economical solution.

Sounds like your landlord is lazy, not frugal.

The landlord doesn't live here. He lives in Nottingham or something. So he doesn't much have to worry about it, I guess. Anyway, apparently he only used poison for the first round, then put down traps after that. So it's likely that he's just an idiot who didn't think through the whole "poison" thing.
