I just used my first bunch of energy on the things that give you extra energy per second, until I got a whole 1 per sec deal. Then I just focused on my army.
HOW DID YOU DO THIS
I've been grinding them for ever since I got energy and I still only reached .974522 per second as of now.

I don't pay attention.
I just leave it running for a bit while I play stuff and work. Boom, instant max energy and billions of larvae when I return. It's an idle game, after al!l :P

Even at the max upgrade of 1 energy per second it doesn't refill to max in a few hours. Certainly in less than 24 (unless you upgrade storage via night bugs) but still.

dumb question, but how do you ascend? I can't see an option for that...

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

I believe you gain the option after you hit 40 hatchery upgrades or 80 expansion upgrades.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

How much mutagen would you recommend you save up for your first ascension? I only have 297k right now.

224 million for maximum slots. And more is better for startup larvae production.

224 million? Well then. Looks like I'll be waiting a while.

If you don't want to wait quite that long, ~10 million isn't terrible.  That said, since growth is (generally) exponential, that gap isn't as big as it seems.

I just keep on failing the rolls for actually getting mutagen when I make an expansion or a hatchery. Fortunately I've gotten to the point where I get Clone Larvae relatively frequently so that'll expand quickly.

Yeah, if you're cranking up a CL engine, keep on rolling.  The amount of mutagen you get on a successful roll goes up regardless of success or failure, so the really early failures become meaningless.  You're guaranteed to not fail more than 7 times in a row, as well.
