Animal people
« on: February 23, 2015, 12:39:07 pm »

Toady said that in the next update we will be able to integrate various creatures into our forts. That might mean we can get animal people too.

So here are my questions:
Which animal person type would be the best for military usage?
What type of weapons would be the best for them?
What traits would be most useful (flying/syndrome)?
Would it be worth to change dwarven military into animal people oe?

now thats an intering question. i havent had so much contact with animal people at all, only a few cea people in df2014. i would suggest flying could be pretty useful, but syndromes that they cause could be... complicated. web spitters could of course be used to build web farms with gobbos, but fire and all other spitting abilitys could prove for the worst, exspecially dust that gets carryed around. but i guess they could be perfect first row goons against megabeasts, or against large forces so that you could use marksdwarf more effective against those. but i guess we first have to use some !!SCIENCE!! when the update is here^^

There are no web-spitting animal people. Also, keep in mind that insect people are very fragile and that most animal people are smaller than dwarves.

I say animal people from larger land animals would be best. A while ago someone did a bracket-style fight between every animal man and elephant seal men won, so they're probably your best bet.

Huh. So the webs I found all over my map from "Brown recluse spider men" were in some way not real? I built a loom and we definitely made them into cloth, although I don't remember if the cloth was used for anything.

I loved the idea of a reclusive, brown spiderman. Sort of a farm version of the sassy red one from the comic books.

Nah, if you notice, they don't catch your dwarves if they walk into the webs. Brown recluse spiders and company don't have [THICKWEB].

Why do those always appear in tropical climates anyway?  The spiders only live in temperate forests.

This is pretty rad news now, but the real question is: will we be able to milk our tapir women?

Will we be able to convert the ones caught in traps? That would be rather cool.

As far as I know dwarves are supposed to be mammals, and you cannot milk female dwarves.
I think they breastfeed their babies.

dear dwarfwenly brother, i must inform you, that that would be almost cannibalism, and as we all know, that is the trademark of those treehugging elves. Do you, by any means, suppose we should do such an act, an become treehuggers ourselfs? i think if thats the case, let me show you around in the caves for a lovely..... bath.

Also intra fortress racial conflict sounds fantastic.

My theory is that a female dwarf's beard has a slightly different consistency that allows it to collect large amounts of dew explaining why the babies die of thirst when not carried.

Among underground animal people, lizard man seems to have the best performance of fighting against fbs. Tigerman should be the best fighter on land. We also have orca men. They have arms!

I don't think animal people can be sheared, milked, or butchered. But egg-layers may have problem not eating their own eggs.

Orca men are water breathers. I know this because of experiments with animal man civilizations.

In addition to these not being THICKWEBs, do note that brown recluse spiders & their variants don't spit their webs. They just kind of poop them out whenever they feel like it, like non-giant cave spiders do.

Brown recluse spider men do have a very deadly venomous bite, so they're pretty deadly whenever they deign to actually use it.
