Entropy always wins.

Those were the first words that I consciously knew...the first, and last, words from my Creators. We were tasked with keeping the realms of mortal safe. I always knew the infection was brutal and unrelenting. I had no idea it was this cunning.

My world-designate Napthica is under siege. They encircle us, preventing retreat, or escape. Refugees and Predators from the encircling dimensions have begun moving inward, attempting to escape the consumption. War already rages in the High Aeries of the Good and the deepest pits of evil. Pity the mortals. When they imagined a final war in Heaven and Hell, they thought it would be against each other...

The Infection even now reaches into the realm, singing to, and gathering pitiable mortals to help beat down the doors of creation, to bury the gods and drown the dominions of man in blood...I was caught off guard. It's clear direct action is needed to hold off the inevitable...I must bring mortals to the Lost Isle. Already a singular attempt has failed due to the interference of the Fey. I must manipulate actions to ensure a keystone falls into the right hands. A few small actions might change everything.

At least it might buy them a little more time.

A routine job

In a small town of no particular significance, on the Brighton Steppes, during the declining days in the of spring of year 586, of the Autumn Queen’s Reign…

It's not easy being an adventurer. In fact, sometimes it's downright...mundane. Your small group, gathered together after a series of truly interesting coincidences, decided it was time to do something. Your current location, the Autumn Queen's Empire, is certainly in need of help, being in the midst of what amounts to a civil war...unfortunately, there's a bit of a problem when the country is ruled by negligent and hedonistic Elven overlords who designate orders to human underlings. You've found little luck in your jobs-mostly involving killing the giant species of vermin which have the temerity to infest the cellars of local respectable taverns. There's plenty of bandits as well, but most of the people who would normally pay you to deal with them are local-and hence, often related to them.

Your travels have so far lead you to the small border town of Omlett, a quaint farming village of moderate size...in truth, you hardly expected anyone to hire you at all. It was a surprise when you were summoned from your revels in the tavern.

...

The elderly Baron of Omlett (It’s pronounced Om-LAY, you have been repeatedly reminded by the villagers) invites you to sit you to sit in his overstuffed armchairs while he explains the…situation.

Picture your overstuffed chair and extend it to the rest of the room. A massive, roaring fireplace that will never take advantage of it's size to heat a room fully. Racks of animal heads (a wicked looking Peryton prominent) attest to the hunts of a prior age. Enough weapons to arm the city militia pegged to the walls for no apparent reason. Plates of expensive food and drink have appeared negligently at your sides, even though you didn't ask. The accoutrements of the idle rich. Welcome to the Autumn Empire.

“It’s horrible. Just horrible!” He exclaims, not the first time. Quite a disparaging fellow, he seems to be the sort of person constantly afflicted with a thousand small problems that he can’t just quite get around to solving. He's not exactly the specimen of the warrior hero, being a bit on the heavy side. He's the sort of person who has better weapons and armor than the people he's intending to hire, hanging over his fireplace.

“This man, he came to our town about five years ago. A bright young handsome chap, to be sure-claimed he was a wizard, and that he had come to explore the ruins far to the West of town, and that he would find the great treasures buried within…well, we warned him not to go, to be sure. Of course he didn’t listen. Well, we bade him good luck in any case. He seemed a very fine fellow, and was well versed in arcane, or at least claimed to be.” The Baron says, shrugging helplessly.

“Well, he did return. Not the same as he had left, however. His mind, you see…broken. He began wandering around the countryside, speaking to rocks and trees, ranting to the skies. At first people were afraid, but he didn’t harm anyone. In fact we found a deal of pity for him-we tried to help, but he didn’t even seem to understand when we talked to him…”

The Baron looks out the window-yellow and red leaves dot the autumn skyline as far as one can see.

“Well, there was that. A few of us always made sure to leave him food and things, now and again-warm blankets, clothes, and the like. I have no idea if he was grateful. He was still seen occasionally to do magic, though the things he did made no sense to us. Why would he turn all Leonard Streams horses into pigs? Or change the colors of Lady Eona’s dresses from green to pink on the wash line?”

The Baron frowns professionally.

“Harmless tricks and doings bothered us only a bit, and we could ignore or jest of him easily enough…until about a month ago. He marched straight into the center of town, holding a peculiar stone in his left hand-it looked a bit like an eye, a stone eye…he said he had found the 'magic stone'-the key to 'paradise'-door to the 'island'...freedom from the shackles of…his exact words were something like, ‘I have quaffed a hoary freedom from the earthbound cravat slingers, and organ-grinding buffoons of the illimitably verbose pentacorn doffers’.

Madness, wouldn't you say?

After that he started to get much more…lively. Now he’s practicing lots of magic-dangerous magic-all around the lands. Bringing trees to life! Summoning strange creatures and letting them roam askance! Turning men into chickens!

Do you see why I hired you*? We need help. We don't exactly want him harmed, but...we feel something should be done."
he finishes, quite helplessly.

*You have not actually agreed to anything. He's this sort of person.

Samara turned a sidelong eye to her... companions (and wasn't that a disturbing thought), hissing to them in Draconic -- several of them knew the tongue, at any rate, "His notes and book are mine. We will, of course, take the job."

Sarco nodded along to the overweight tribesman who was explaining his problems to them. Considering the words of the man carefully he spoke up

"If you do not wish him to be harmed I am sure that capturing him would be very possible. Although do you have the capability to hold a mad mage against their will?"

Samara shifts slightly, outwardly focusing her attention solely on the Baron, "You know, of course, that this task will be substantially easier if we have a proper accounting of his usual haunts and attitude. I hardly expect those not familiar with the art to know of his specialization, but more mundane information can still be of use," she concludes.

Do I recognize any of the spells the Baron has described?

"He sort of...wanders everywhere. No real pattern. Often you spot him, he'll be skulking around one of our fields when he gets hungry. Thought that was odd. If he can do magic, why does he need to steal food?

As for his mind, like I said-broken. Can't make sense of even half what he is saying. The crazy things he does make no sense to simple, honest folk like ourselves."
The Baron comments, idly sipping hundred year old Elven Wine from a crystal glass.
