The party flees rapidly, shame stinging their wounds.

"....And don't come back!" Roars the beast behind you, with a sinister booming laugh.

...

They eventually make their way through the rest of the monastery-soon to be destroyed or owned by a Dragon, it's something of a shame you were not able to explore it more fully. Perhaps one day you may yet return...

After what seems like a hundred flights of stairs, the party finds themselves opening a heavy stone door to feel the sting of cold mountain air-and the view of the early morning sun peeking behind storm-wracked grey clouds. The lands of the Winter Kingdom stretch around them in an amazing, panoramic view. To the East, a deep blue lake with a busy current, constantly rushing out into massive waterfalls that lead into the swamp of Doomy you were able to avoid traveling through...Kawtari notices that it seems there might have once been a massive dam across the river, made of progenitor crystal-but in this age, there are only two jutting piers of broken crystal. What could have destroyed something so huge?

To the West at the base of the mountain, there is what can only be described as a massive flat plain of stone, unadorned except for it's utter lack of life. Samara can distantly espy tiny figures moving about the surface with mechanical intent...

Far to the Southwest, a lonely castle juts up from the forest like a rude finger.

You  are of course, likely going directly South-where the distant chimneys of Omlett can just barely be seen after the large expanse of hills and forestlands you passed to get here.

...

Wataklano is here on the platform, along with Aldeth-there are only a few birds left...giant Black Ravens with a cranky demeanor, they eye the party suspiciously, intelligent enough to realize they'll be carrying heavier people this time than light weight Kenku. Each one has it's own individual Kenku rider-flamboyant birds dressed in fancy jackets, fluted breeches, and long trailing scarves all in garish, riotous colors-they also have trendy feathered hats (their own feathers, bizarrely) and decorative riding goggles that make them even more...um, impressive. Many of them seem to be smoking ridiculously long pipes and crow-calling to one another, but only Kawtari catches any meaning of what they are saying. It seems to her they are making bets on which of the outsiders gets which rider. Currently, the pool on Samara is pretty good-her rider will get four gold, a jug of Ghanama and a feather preening from Kalakakalans's cute sister. Sarco seems to be barely clearing hard currency, though-his pool consists of a pair of old boots, and a bawdy rhyme in the riders honor.

....

"Hey, glad you could make it, friends. I do think we should be off, don't you?" he says generously. He motions to the small flock, which consists of half a dozen smaller, quicker birds and one larger, caravan type bird-there are many small chicks sleeping underneath it's canopy, and both Coney and Akira are also laid securely in the bedding.

"You've got your choice, anyway. Take a backseat on one of the small ones, or ride the large one-it can carry half of you safely. We probably won't need you to fight anything in the air, but it might be good to have you alert. That being said, the other one is pretty comfy if you need to rest a bit...."

He glances over at Kawtari then.

"+...are you okay? You look a bit...singed around the edges.+" He signs, implying worry.

Sarco looks around at the various birds on offer before asking Wataklano "Are you sure. That they can hold my weight? They are large too be sure, but seem fragile."

Wataklano nods.

"Shouldn't be a problem, though the Ravens would probably disagree...granted, we'll be flying very slow and pretty close to the ground-what the jockeys like to call a 'belly run'-but, we shouldn't have any problems. Don't be surprised if your boots touch the treetops, though." He says, with Kenku twinkle in his beady eyes.

In the distance, one of the riders hand-signs to another that if one of them drops Sarco, he's keeping his pair of boots. Many of them seem amused by this, judging by their clucking laughter.

"Well, if you are sure. I shall ride this one then." Sarco says, approaching any bird with a Kenku that he recognizes from the party last night, or, failing to recognize any, simply a randomly selected close one. "Hello kind rider. May I come aboard?" He asks the Kenku rider with a bow.

The Kenku you choose favors yellow and black stripes on both her apparel and her raven-she seems to have painted the wings in a wasp-design.

She gives you a weary glance, though you have no idea why.

"...sure, hop aboard..." She squawks with resignation. "My name's Skawatariari, and this is Calialiamandiali." she says, patting her mount.

Those names are a mouthful...

"There was none, it seems."

Mount up with the nearest unoccupied rider and raven.

"It was a trap."

Tadhg quickly explains what happened.

"We didn't think it was wise to linger and risk being left behind. I am sorry."

Samara's Kenku seems to be in a better mood. No doubt his rainbow-glass goggles have something to do with it. It seems she chose the whacky one.

"Wahcoocaw! Welcome aboard, pretty Elf Lady! Make sure you strap in securely! Zarathiusthra likes to do barrel roooolllllls!" He comments with obvious enthusiasm, not indicating if he's talking about his bird, or himself.

Sarco scrambles up on top of the bird behind Skawatariari and tries to secure himself the best he can. "Thank you. Miss... Skawa. Tari. Ari." Sarco says, as he fumbles somewhat with her name.

The party all packs onto their chosen birds and riders, with some amount of hurry.

Wataklano is the last to leave-he uses a long metal rod to trace a complicated symbol on the ground below the doorway leading into the monastery, sighing when he finishes.

"...Thus, it ends. I've cast the spell that will start the chain reaction....the others, at the other entrances, should cast theirs soon enough...hopefully, there will be nothing but rubble left for the Queen to sift through. Hopefully we crush that Dragon, too!"

...

The party soars.

Flying through the air on nimble ravens, they can only hold tightly and watch the terrain speed by-though occasionally their riders perform sharp banks, dives and barrel rolls to keep them 'awake'. Sarco in particular learns his mount enjoys 'deadfeather dives' where Calialiamandiali goes limp and pretends to be dead and plummets to the ground, only to recover and ascend at the last possible moment.

"...sorry about that, friend, she's very playful!" Skawatariari says once or twice, shouting over the sound of the rushing wind.

...

About an half hour later, you all see a battle erupting, far in the distance-a cloud of greasy female bird folk that look like harpies, engaging the Kenku Riders in another part of the caravan.

Your group plays amazingly little role in this battle-Wataklano, who is driving the larger caravan bird, makes a series of hand signals to his fellows, and you all stay in formation. You can only watch from the distance as they wheel and spin in an amazing aerial battle, so fast you can barely make out what's happening. It seems the Kenku are winning, through-they are not as nimble, but work in groups to pick off harpies one by one-some baiting harpies to attack, and others diving down on them, cutting them off one by one with long spears, or plucking them out of the air with powerful longbows. Of course, occasionally a tragedy-a Kenku rider and his mount go down as well, swarmed by his many enemies, fighting to the end.

What happens next is a bit of a surprise. Half a dozen harpies manage to break through the Kenku lines, diving toward the caravan. Two are cut down by encircling riders...

Four continue to close at rapid speed, aiming for Wataklano, Coney and the Chicks.

Your party is all mounted on their own birds, encircling the caravan. Your riders, all fly forward to engage...though they are slowed by your weight, and will need your help-no doubt.

Time to act!

Note: You have some control over your riders, too. They'll listen to any order you give them, most likely.

Fire Bolt the nearest harpy with clear line-of-effect whenever possible. Try to keep an energy advantage, favoring altitude over airspeed.

"Stay high, yes?"

"Grah! These cowards, attacking Chicks when warriors are here!" Sarco snarls as he brings out a spear. "Can you fly me closer good rider, so that I may send these villains down to meet the earth!"
