I don't think it's totally unbelievable that someone posted something like that and didn't get banned. Although I would find it unbelievable if their post didn't get scrubbed and they didn't get a warning. Because despite what some people bizarrely think around here, unless you're a obviously spammer or ban dodger, you don't just get banned randomly or on the first offense (well, unless that offense is really big). You get a warning. A series of warnings more often then not. If needed your offensive content is removed so that the thread that you upset can go on.

Even if you can point to a single offense committed by one person they didn't get banned for, that's not really proof of some conspiracy against newer members when everyone on the moderation list has a long history of stirring up shit over and over and being unable or unwilling to heed their warnings.

EDIT: And the reason VN wasn't shut down wasn't because it was stupid (which it was, but instead of keeping the stupid there it just spilled onto the other boards) but because of one woman who took the time to just constantly post shota (Japanese young boy hentai) there constantly. Toady's choice was to close the board and ban her or to get v& by the FBI, which I think is fair enough.

Uh, no? I mean I assume she got banned and her posts deleted. I don't remember this person (I stayed away from the hentai on VN) but the FBI didn't say "To make sure this never happens again this needs to be split up into more specific sub-forums." Toady changed VN because it consistently had tons of shitty posts over a long period and was spreading to other parts of the forum.

????

Did I say that the FBI said it?

If you're a web host and you don't have a very dedicated legal team (see: 8chan), you are not going to allow stuff like what she was posting. I don't know about US law, but depictions of it are completely illegal in the UK.

Not really, Toady said at some point that he generally didn't like the idea of having a chaotic /b/ style subforum since it reflected badly on him.  Also it was a moderation nightmare that leaked out into other places quite frequently.

I mean, the main issue was the crap like the hentai etc threads, as that very much reflects badly on the web host. Otherwise I honestly doubt Toady would've cared.

What was this VN people are talking about? Was it the desolate wasteland it sounds like it was?

That's not really an accurate description. For a very long time, VN was the sole lower board. Eventually, proliferation of forum games got enough that splitting the board up occurred, which eventually just left VN as nonsense, largely of the sort that hangs around gd these days. In time, it got progressively worse.

And that old post of Armok's that I assume you're talking about was creepy but almost certainly not illegal, if I recall. If memory serves, it wasn't even hosted here as well.

I don't know, I think it was certainly pushing the boundaries within UK law. I did say links to it, though. :p

I think that the forum tends to moderate itself fairly well, with the Toad only stepping in when things get out of hand and self-moderation isn't working.  I've never actually been personally warned by Toady, but some posts of mine got hammered (in the DF section, no less) because I got into an angry debate with someone about the merits of the new release, and Toady issued an in-thread warning to everyone involved.  Since then, I tend to steer well clear of actually flammable issues, at least in posting: I moderated a religion thread, but the rules there were incredibly strict (although not particularly well enforced, seeing as how I took a partial leave of absence partway through the thread) to the point where I actually put a poll up asking if they were TOO strict.  In the end, I think that the culture we have here is good, and I've yet to see a ban of someone that surprised me if I knew the person.  I think perhaps one of the sticking points of the issue is his preemptive toadhammering of threads similar to one that got out of hand, like the new rage thread or the "hi, new guy on the forums" threads, but I think that the way he does it is fair.

Yeah im pretty new member but ive been lurking in the shadows for a while. And I got a warning for a two posts I wrote. At first they seemed docile enough, but Toady gave a warning, at first I was confused about it and couldnt find the scrubbed posts so I asked him a week later what I had said and I got told.
I really respected that and realised what I said wasnt specificly insulting, but it was contexual and got reported.
I often post sick stuff in my adventure posts, but its obviously ok for the setting and im sure if I moved the same posts somwhere else I could be reported.

Yeah Ive been banned before. In a minecraft server after the totalitarian moderater years younger than me would basicly ban people just cause. I stood up to this and after a while he got grumpy that I knew better.
Tarn wouldnt dare be immature... hes a grown human and seems troubled but is sensible
Naw thats Kurtulmaks job.

I tried resurecting him but old gods sleep deep.
Or maybe I did wake him but he erased my memory.
What was I talking about... oh an adventurer traveling

Eventually Various Nonsense was an amalgamation of Awesome nonsense, horrible nonsense, fire, and porn.

There was far too little of the earlier.

That being said Jackrabbit still exists. He just has legions of spies within the forum who xommunicate to him if anything particularly interesting happens.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

Honestly, moderation here is pretty lax. I don't think I've ever seen someone banned without being warned first. Bans are what happen when warnings are ignored. Most of it is handled behind the scenes more or less unless someone gets muted, and you're more likely to get muted than banned. Topics that get blacklisted typically have, what, 3 long locks by the toad before they do get blacklisted, and it typically happens when bans are immanent anyway.

And honestly, I've gotten by here seven years without a warning. If anything, people from that far back tend to leave more often than are banned. Or in my case at least, mostly lurk. But yeah, I've seen people manage to repeal bans before, you can do it by emailing the toad, but it typically takes a while, and it's not quite guaranteed. Plus, if you get banned again, that'd be it I'd assume. Not sure if it's ever happened though.

From what I've heard, the Toad has only ever repealed two bans, and one of those people had their account hacked or something so they weren't actually responsible.  The other one, I'm not as sure about, that was Roc_cuiriousbeast_eater or whatever his name is.  I hesitate to speculate on that one out loud, but I do have my theories about why he got his ban repealed.

Did the roaming thread fortress start in VN? That was long enough ago that I can't remember. (For those not in the know, basically it was a thread that took advantage of the ability of the OP to move their own threads to different boards to start causing trouble).
