Fortress Mode - Help me Fight a Roc!
« on: February 18, 2015, 07:31:06 pm »

Nefola Thiyiramithe Tise Equuyi the Roc has come - apparently - to fly randomly around the map, with an occasional break to eat one of my Dralthas and collide into my militia.

Look at him up there. Scheming.

Anyway, I don't want to hole up in my fortress forever, lest the cave adaptation get any worse. Does anyone have any advice for taking it down?

Cage traps instantly catch monsters, and a Roc is a very powerful monster to have at your disposal. That said, if you don't care for animal taming, you can just arm your militias with crossbows and bolts and shoot it down then kill it with a melee squad, Rocs don't wear armor after all.

Lock yourself in.
Retire fort.
Make demigod adventurer.
Que training montage with the song maniac by michael sembello.
Kill the burd.
Eat the burd.
Retire the adventurer in the fort area.
Reclaim fort hopefully it didnt fall unto ruins.
Reopen fort and invite the demigod inside for roc and rolls.

Or sky magma.
Its like magma but nothing like lava.
You have to dig into clouds to get it. Clouds are like aerial aquifers but filled with sky magma.

Or a legitimate way would be to train a bunch of xbowmen and cage traps.
Perhaps the dwarven guillotine modified for cage traps at the end instead of blade traps.
Its basicly a trap that causes a dwarf to be swept away, fall get stunned and activate a trap.
Its.... fun

Watch out, rocs can tear sheets up! Silk sheets.
Easily removing limbs with its talons.
If you are not familiar with a rocs size, look up some pictures. Im sure you are, they are, Gigantic. Can carry whales in one talon. Can be killed with the right method though. Its still a bird. Neck injuries will fell it quickly.
An iron/steel longsword/spear stab to the neck can make the bird pass out.

I know whats going to happen though.
You will fail and Roc never dies!

The Roc seems to have gotten into a top-level mine shaft through a lake. I didn't know that was possible, but there you go.

My militia should now at least be able to catch up to it. Whether or not they have the advantage is yet to be seen.

Let's hope they get here soon.

Alright, they've caught up to it, and...

...oh.

Well. That's fairly disappointing, isn't it?

After all, Hammer beats Roc.

I don't think i've ever fought a roc, but I'm quite sure if a roc is high up in the sky you can just take a few marksdwarves (trained or an untrained levy, doesn't matter) and shoot at him.

With a few bolts it should pass out from the pain, stop flying, fall and meet the ground. Considering falling damage is function of mass and that rocs are very, very heavy...

I do believe the proper term should be rocsplosion.

There is generally nothing that can be done about rogue fliers. Marksdwarves tend to be totally useless, since:
1. The can't hit anything higher up than 3 tiles up.
2. They refuse to move to shoot at things. So if they're not directly under it (and it's low enough) they'll just desert and go back to training. I've had a very frustrating chase of raven inside my completely enclosed 3 tile high courtyard, and it took a long time to chase them down because of the uncooperative deserters.
3. Fliers tend to zip back and forth at a high speed, so there is very little chance to get the marksdwarves underneath one before they have left.

I have no experience with DF rocs, but if they are building destroyers they ought to be possible to lure with bait, possibly a string of doors, into a tunnel that can be closed off. If rocs are bloodthirsty, you can probably use a string of kitten instead.

How were you moving them around? I always station the soldiers and they just take pot shots at the fliers up to about twenty tiles away (I think it was 20 tiles, I didn't actually count)...

I stationed them, until I though I was close enough to actually fire. Usually I was wrong and they snuck off. Never saw them fire while stationed, probably because raven aren't hostile enough. A small number of tiles off to the side at an height of +3 failed and they dispersed.

I've had marksdwarves fire at nonaggressive birds, though I think they were off duty at the time (I don't think they were hunting, maybe the bird swooped too low and scared some cows or something)...

More recently I used soldiers to shoot at some kea men who were stealing our stuff, but they are more aggressive than ravens...

I know I used to have a lot of trouble with ravens in previous versions where they would just hang around in the sky blocking other animals from entering...

In my current/last fortress I've had a raven hanging around for probably over 10 years. Its partner in crime got itself caught in my traps trying to invade, but has since died of old age. Occasionally some other group of creatures arrive, however, but when they leave there is a long empty time with only the raven.

What version are you running? I know in .40 the code for fliers was changed so they would leave the map eventually...

0.40.24...
I don't know if capturing parts of a group causes the remainder to remain.

I also have problems with campers in the caverns. I've sealed of the entries to the 2:nd and 3:rd caverns with walls with drawbridges in them. Creatures (mostly crundles, but also e.g. reachers) come and sit unmoving on the walls two levels from the ground for years. Sometimes they are shaken loose by me opening the outermost drawbridge, and a few times I've conducted odd maneuvers to kill them off, but they definitely don't cycle as they ought.
