Feel free to quote me on that though. I'm like, two levels up from this game, so it should mention something.

Okay, well then I will work on a writeup for the turn based on:

[]Build Orders:
        []Slot 1 : - Fusion Fragment Thruster
        []Slot 2 : - Biodome
        []Slot 3 : - Interstellar Flight Conversion

Research: Nuclear lightbulb
Hero choice :  Jacquin Velantes
Cargo : None yet
Event : Domes and Dales

Incidentally I have been reading up on solar disc accretion and planetary formation theory.  Fascinating stuff that just blew a small hole in the solar system I developed.  I am gonna make some minor alterations to better fit current theories, so if we go too fast on these phases we might have a bit of a stop when the ship gets to the system.

On the up side most of the reason it is taking so long is that the Focus Detection Array is going to give you as much information at a distance as you would normally get right at the planet.

Turn 3 July 2076 - Sept 2076 Aug 2076

[]Build Orders:
        []Slot 1 : - Fusion Fragment Thruster
        []Slot 2 : - Biodome
        []Slot 3 : - Interstellar Flight Conversion

Research: Nuclear lightbulb
Hero choice :  Jacquin Velantes
Cargo : None yet
Event : Domes and Dales

Event roll 29Marginal Success
Research roll 4+10Critical Failure 56 Significant Failure - Technology Impossible

Work on the rocket continues briskly, building on decades old technology not used on Earth after the development of clean fusion.  In contrast the space colones had ample supplies of fissile materials and an easy means to dispose of unwanted waste.  Numerous modern power plant designs are poured over and the most likely designs are simulated and a prototype built.

The system worked on basic principles, heat and energy transfer, self limiting fission reactions that can run hot but not melt down.  It would be a perfect method for taking off or landing on almost any planet.  The other Outpost projects were even plotting to place versions on their hull for slow burn landings.  In theory it was perfect.

The explosion was spectacular, and in every direction at once.

The report was simple, the theory was sound, the test data had proven it.  The materials available were the issue.  The pressure and energies were just too much for a controlled system bombarded by so much direct radiation.  It would take years, possibly decades of research into specialized nano scale materials to put the theory in practice.  The fission lightbulb rocket was possible, but not for this project.

There was no news on the war.  No contact in fact with any other asteroid force at all.  Whether they were maintaining silence to keep hidden, or had already met their fate was unknown.

Resources had stopped coming in, now stockpiles were dwindling as existing buildings were stripped to the bone.  Anything that would not support the outpost is removed.

A nuclear rocket system will not work.  Unless you want to go with an Orion system or a space elevator it will be conventional rockets.  I know this might put a problem in your design so, half turn!

Turn 3.5 Sept 2076

[]Build Orders:

[]Slot 3 : - Interstellar Flight Conversion - Keep or use for something else

[]Research Order: made at -20 (-10 with existing bonus)

[]Event: Cargo
A scramble for a supply ship which had not yet been assigned to any mission has begun.  Should you divide the spoils evenly or try and force a larger share?  Select one:

        A) Follow protocol and divide the resources; Choose 10 RU of cargo
        B) Send in a large force to grab whatever you can; Choose 20 RU of cargo, security roll to see what you get
        C) Secure the ship for your own use. Choose 30 RU of cargo, security roll at -20

Well, so much for the nuclear fission drive.

Does that research action mean we get another research attempt before turn 4?

[]Build Orders:

        []Slot 3 : - Interstellar Flight Conversion -

[]Research Order:  Vessel solar power kit* (Based on the existing solar kit, but intended for deployment on the ship after arrival. Vacuum proof packaging allowing it to be placed inside the vessel's hull without damage. Downsized, so that it takes up only 5 space. While the capacity of the panels has been more than halved, the fact that it will be in near perpetual sunlight (90 % CF instead of 30%) will hopefully result in a net increase in power production.  Hopefully rather cheap.)

*This is cargo, btw. It's intended to be assembled upon arrival.

[]Event: B
-1x He-3 Inertial Fusion Generator kit. Cost: 15 RU, Size: 2 Mass: 4 Generates 50 MW.
-1x Oxygen Extractor. Cost 5 RU. Size 2, Mass 4

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyway: Crazy suggestions :

-Crazy idea of the day. We stuff solar panels in the 5 size units we free with the modifications, and then we also install a communication LAZOR, for use at the destination. After all, this vessel is rather fast and otherwise it would be just 25 people staying here for more than a decade. Chances are the Ark arrives before the message does, but it's the thought that counts.

Yes, you get another research turn before turn 4 for this half turn.  It is at -20 because it is so rushed.

Seems like keeping the interstellar flight and researching a space suitable hull mounted solar array cargo is what you want to research, plus option B.

Just need confirmation on what cargo you want and we can start round 4.

Looks good, I will have the turn up soon.  Back to back work schedules and someone's birthday have left me little time for other things.

Turn 3  July 2076 - September 2076

Turn 3.5

[]Event: Cargo : B 41   Marginal success 10+2d6 cargo seized 15

The failure of the Fission Rocket prototype creates a schism in the remaining scientific community on the colony.  The promise of a grand contribution is broken and nothing can restore the moral loss.  A small core group continue to work around Dr Valentes and the solar panels but many more abandon the project to work on their own desires in an attempt to make the most of the their last few months.

In the end the specialists needed to make substantial improvements to the existing systems are not available.  Plans are drawn up for a standard deep space solar panel array, well shielded, small and able to operate to some degree even in minimal solar luminosity, then packed into a smaller, secured package with attachments able to work with the outpost ship.  The lack of gravity will allow small motors and a lightweight line and hinge system to be added to allow the four standard units to open up by themselves once installed on the outside.

New Cargo available:

External Orbital Solar Panels. Cost 20 RU, Size 5, Mass 6. Latest technological improvements at Sol have given solar panels a staggering efficiency, approaching 30% limit. While power output might not be stable, or as high per ton of equipment as fusion generators, solar power is simpler, cannot explode and does not depend upon fuel. Simply take a panel, point it at the sun, and plug in a cord. A single set contains enough panels to provide 30 MW of power in orbit after attachment to another vessel.  The solar panels open on their own and can track and turn for maximum efficiency, but require oversight through a command interface (an existing command center will do without additional manpower).  Significant bonus to vacuum survival.

The cargo hold had a dozen works, most sitting, a few securing cargo crates full of raw materials to loaders but Dora recognized actual work, and every eye looked around nervously, every hand was near a heavy tool that could double as a weapon.  Tina stood on the largest crate in the room, a reddish camouflage jumpsuit and dull tan helmet covering most of her face made her stand out from the rest.  A pair of taser armed guards stood at the bottom of the crate facing the workers.

And so we turn at last on each other.  Expected but regrettable, Dora mused.

Who is in charge here? She asked, pulling up a sheet of paper in her hand, I have an order here to transfer the Fusion Generator to the Settler.

The hell you are, shouted a loud voice belong to a suddenly appearing man with a poor shave, crumpled top hat and a wrinkled but clean grey suit.  You minions of the corporate jackasses who got us into this mess are not stealing anything else today, we are dealing this evenly.  Might even cut you out.

As he started to approach her, the two guards raised their weapons and every other hand in the room reached for a blunt object.  We will just see who cuts who if you want to do this, Tina shouted, One more step, make one more step.

A blood bath would follow and she was in the middle of it.  Well, time for the bluff then.  Dora put on a smile and explained.

No Vicente, no, we worked out a deal, between our captains.  The generator can only go to one, and there is more valuable cargo in here.  She steps forward and holds out the paper which is quickly snatched by a gloved hand.

I will check with my command, if this is a trick!

Check then if you must.  Everyone seemed to get a signal all at once and went back to work.  Dora climbed up the crate and sat down waiting while Vincente talked in rather heated tones over an intercom.

Fine, he shouted after a few minutes, then motioning to some of the workers, Lets go, we have more to move.

As the Settler heavy bot mechs started moving the parts to the generator Tina asked, How the hell did you get them to agree to that?

Let's just hurry up and get out of here, Dora replied softly, then I can show you the great features of the DALES system, it can communicate quite well in plain words and you would be surprised at the software it includes.  Valentes even thought to add high end audio programs and hacking tools.

-1x He-3 Inertial Fusion Generator kit. Cost: 15 RU, Size: 2 Mass: 4 Generates 50 MW. added at no cost

Event Roll 66 - +20 bonus to next turn or launch roll this turn

As accusations and threats are pass back and forth between the missions a message is received from the Admiral.  A major counter strike against Lunar base was successful, damaging the supply lines.  Most of the Asteroid forces were taken out after revealing their positions for the strike and now the last are headed to delay the main Terran fleet as long as they can.

Pictures of Earth sent along are quickly suppressed.  Thick clouds block out most of the planet and what images get through are filled with empty, still cities standing like tombstones above a devastated ecosystem.  Just a year and a half after the impact surface life can not be found, DALES helpfully estimates the survival of the ocean biosphere near a 45% chance.

Whoever wins this war has no prize.

Turn 4  Oct 2076 - Dec 2076

[]Build Orders:
        []Slot 1 : -
        []Slot 2 : -
        []Slot 3 : -

Research: +10 bonus

Cargo :

Event : Launch - The enemy forces may be delayed, or headed elsewhere all together.  That is no safe haven from a lone missile or stealth ship however.
A ) Launch now; you will have a turn 4.5 for final cargo orders, launch escape at +20
B ) One more turn; They bought us time, we should use it, +20 to next turn's event.

I thought Dales was a ship component. And boy that solar array is expensive. Doesn't matter though, I made an error so we won't be getting the laser anyway.

- Medium Shuttle Bay Size:18
- Medium Cargo Bay + Small Cargo Bay Size: 33
- Giant fuel tank

Cargo :
- Organic Sludge Compressor kit. Cost 2 RU, Size 2, Mass 1
- Medium Shuttle

Research : DALES-Ship Interface system (basically letting DALES manage the day to day business.)

Is giant fuel tank size 10 or 12?  You could fit a size 14 if you like as well.

The original plan was for a size 8 Tank actually. Best take a size 10 tank to be sure.
