DALES orders:General ship routine, keeping monitoring of all ship systems for abnormalities

Research Orders:Using DALES and the lab, come up with a modified version of the bot swarm logic using the heavy bot mechs that is activated when two or more mechs are put on the same task.

Wake up Leader? No

Other Orders:See if the crew can come up with VR goggles

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Did you want to make repairs or just go with the -10 for the first turn?

Flight turn 1 2077 - 2082

DALES orders: General ship routine, keeping monitoring of all ship systems for abnormalities (Research)

Research orders: Using DALES and the lab, come up with a modified version of the bot swarm logic using the heavy bot mechs that is activated when two or more mechs are put on the same task. (Dales used for Research +15)

Wake up leader? No

Other orders: See if the crew can come up with VR goggles -10 No Workshop

Event: Early Launch.

                A. Quick repairs at Ceres base.  Maintenance penalty reduced to -5 and another escape roll at +20

Escape +20 (77+20=97) Very Good Success

Maintenance Check -5 (31=31) Marginal Failure

Moral Check -10 crowded hallways -10 No Entertainment +10 Plants (30=30) Marginal Failure

Research Check +15 DALES +10 Advanced Lab +20 Adapting Existing Technology (14+45=59) Ongoing Research

VR Goggles -10 (85-10=75) Good Progress

After the detonation of the Settler's dock one of the other vessels launch right away.  This leaves room for quick repairs to the outer hull, which quickly discover several critical fractures in the outer hull.  New plates are hastily created and replaced as the crew checks everything over from top to bottom.  A plan to use the extra time to reenforce the empty hull space to fit some of the cargo crowding the hallways goes into effect and some extra room is freed up, allowing the crew to have a little more leg room.  Maintenance penalty eliminated, crowded hallways penalty eliminated.  Cargo closet added 2 space 0 mass, hallways are at 3/5.

Less then a week later the ship is on it's way, picking up speed as it moves past the outer most objects in the solar system.

Things start breaking down much sooner then expected.  Nothing critical and DALES keeps a good account for the crew, but there is not much they can do on many of the systems besides patch them up.  Without a dedicated workspace and tools to take things apart they can not really be repaired. -3 ongoing to maintenance.

There is lots of room but not much to do.  Endless days drag on...  -4 next moral check (thanks to quick 6 year turnover of crew this will only last one turn)

The primary issue with the swarm logic for the larger robots is that the existing group projects do not make sense for larger bots that can complete many of them solo.  The crew is mildly distracted with coming up with scenarios where they could be useful together and running the simulations through DALES and the research computers.  Progress is made on both enhancing existing functions and possible new ones for the larger robots.  +10 to ongoing research on Heavy Bot Swarm Logic

Aaja started working on a set of VR goggles in the downtime between patching up loose wires around the bridge.  The set that DALES had created a design for seemed odd and the pieces did not seem to fit together, then she discovered by accident that the Mini Lab actually included one in the small office space for interacting with the research computer.  It was a dedicated device but she could copy and improve on it easily.  Now to just find the right parts in all these bins... 75/100

Turn 2 2082 - 2087

Maintenance -3 Wear and Tear (41-3=38) Marginal Failure

Moral -4 Confinement -10 No Entertainment +10 Plants (6-4=2) Significant Failure

Research +55 (24+55=79) Good Progress

VR Goggles -10 (88-10=78) Complete + bonus

The second shift of crew members is woken up and briefed on the system failures and jury rigging used to fix them.  The computers work fine, but all the little things tend to break down now and again. -2 ongoing to maintenance

Then a wrong comment about how dreary one of the current crew is acting sets off a fistfight on the bridge.  Falling in low gravity still hurts, and three of the newly awakened crew end up with serious injuries as they try and restrain the man.  After cooling down he is apologetic and just breaks down crying about how terrible it all is, gladly going into the cryo system, his punishment to be decided at a later time.  Moral penalty of -4 carries over to turn 3, additional -4 penalty, 3/6 crew members injured.

The newly awakened shift throws themselves into the work the first shift, bot simulations running around the clock, the newly finished VR headsets function to allow them to watch in real time or design new ones with ease.  The final phase of putting together the swarm logic code from the disparate simulation data is begun.  +25 to ongoing Heavy Bot Swarm Logic research

The headsets are completed, enough for the whole crew of 6 and lightweight.  A basic operating system and central server is set up thanks to DALES, however no practical programs exist to be used with them.  A particularly skilled coder however has plans for that... 6 VR Goggles and central database/server completed ; Bonus programming option; -.1 basic parts -.1 advanced parts

Turn 3 2087 - 2092

Maintenance -5
Moral -8 (this turn only)

Crew:

6 Awake (3 injured)

20 Cryo (1 criminal?)

Orders:

DALES orders : Research/Maintenance/Moral/Other

Research Orders: Heavy Bot Swarm Logic(+35)/Other

Wake up leader?

Medical Event: Injured crew -  They can recover now and be ready to go once you land, but broken bones and in one case recovering from a concussion will prevent any research or other work due to the skeleton crew.
                        A. Cryo - They will remain injured.
                        B. Heal - No non-essential work.

VR goggles: What did you want these to be used for?  Suggestions include research, entertainment, engineering.  Wireless hookup allows cloud based rendering so you can prototype additional uses for the same set.
You get a basic version for free.

What do the rest of you think of using the VR for entertainment at first, researching an engineering/research variant, cyroing the injured and keeping the leader asleep?

Entertainment first, then see if we can code a basic VR CAD. As for the crew, question: Can they at least operate a bot controller if we say, hook up the controller to the ship's comp and boost the signal through the advanced array? If so, then yeah cycle them back into cryo so they can heal later.

Eh, bot oversight is half planning and such in addition to watching what they are doing.  The ships and such were expensive enough I am just gonna rule your ship can act as a weak communications satellite if you put it in a geosynchronous orbit.

The issue here is you will need a signal booster on the ground of some sort when they mine.

The advanced array can't send signals however.  It's 'like' a super telescope.

Just be glad I checked my own rule book on that failure!  I almost turned off half the ship systems in a major disaster.  No medical supplies + no medical center yeah no quick recovery.

The (criminal?) means you can decide his punishment, treatment or status later.

I say for the criminal, since he appears to be remorseful, have him apologize to every guy he hurt then put him on punishment duty consisting of every physically demanding manual labor task on the ship without assistance for a few months, and call it even.

So:

DALES Orders:Continue with ship monitoring and research help.

Research Orders:Finish Heavy Bot Swarm Logic

Medical Event:Cryo until landfall
Corollary: Criminal crewman who started fight has to apologize and be put on punishment detail for a few months

VR Goggles: Free Entertainment(Call of Duty XX anyone? :P). If we have free runtimes at any point, have the coder start on a basic VR CAD

Bad idea. Very bad idea even. We don't want to put the physically unstable person of anything, especially not alone. Leave him in cryo for now, I'd say.

How about one week in cyro, without actually doing any cyro? Basically a 1 week prison sentence. Should be enough as deterrence.

Turn 3 2087 - 2092

Maintenance -5 (79-5=74) Good Success
Moral -8 -5 poor entertainment +10 Plants (9-3=6) Fail
Research +60 (74+60=134) Success, bonus to further research
Other: VR CAD (77) Ongoing development

Opinions are split on what to do with the crewman who caused the injuries, while everyone agreed that zero-g recovery was a poor idea.  All four are put in cryo, to be dealt with at a later time.

The VR Entertainment programs are quickly adapted from existing computer games and training software while humorous attempts by DALES to automatically build programs from existing media are distracting but relatively unsuccessful.  One hybrid human designed, DALES moderated program it does work well with is a 'museum' type function making viewing art more intuitive and engaging then just flipping through files.  The functions are very basic but it provides an extra entertainment option.

Confinement has always cause issues with mental health, even the gilded cage is still a cage.  When the graffiti started showing up no one even paid much attention, when brutally violent images were burned into several hallway walls no one admitted to doing it.  Crew moral is at an all time low throughout the five years and there just doesn't seem to be much to fix it besides contact with lots of different people and space to not be staring at the same metal walls.  -5 to moral ongoing due to graffiti -.1 basic supplies (stolen to make graffiti) -8 penalty carried over to next shift

Sometimes it seems the only thing that really keeps people going is the ongoing repairs, a new method to shut down systems and take them apart to make dedicated repairs is put into place, minor repairs are made easier and plans are made to fix up some of the routine damage that has been building up.  During the turnover a look over the Fusion Rocket system and bio dome as well as an external spacewalk find only minor, expected damage well within operational standards.

Research on the Heavy Bot swarm logic is interrupted by new ideas for how to use and make the bots.  Plans are drawn up for giant robots, dedicated systems and even smaller super swarm bots.  Despite the lack of focus the program is finished.  There are practical limitations of the Heavy Bot design, but multiple Heavy bots will be now be much more effective.  Heavy Bot swarm logic completed (When working on the same task Two bots add +5, 3 add +10, 5 add +15, 8 add +20, bonus is to each individual Heavy Bot working on the task)  New research options : Super Heavy Bots +20 ; Specialized Heavy Bots +20; Small Bots +20 (These will provide a bonus to prototyping Bots of these types when finished, the +20 means that researching them will be easier)

The DALES system seems to be improving in research assistance, it is automatically bringing up new information, keeping track of errors and can even do basic programing and design work automatically when given specific parameters.  There is still a lot of room for improvement to it's abilities however.  Research dedicated bonus increased to +20/30

A VR Computer Aided Design program is easy to make by adapting some DALES functions and a similar one from the lab.  Without a 3D printer or manufacturing area however the practical use of the system is disputed.  A complex physics simulator is begun to allow the program to estimate how functional the designs will actually be.  +25 to ongoing development

Turn 4 2092 - 2097

Maintenance -5
Moral -8 -5 +5
Research +10

DALES orders:Research(+20), maintenance(+?), moral(+?), other

Research Orders: Super Heavy Bots +20 ; Specialized Heavy Bots +20; Small Bots +20 ; VRCAD +25; Other

Other Orders: VRCAD, graffiti, something else?

Maintenance orders: You can spend .1 basic supplies to repair the existing -5 maintenance penalty (no roll, automatic success thanks to roll turn 3)

Message from DNS Renewal decoded by DALES:

I do not know if you will receive this but we are sending it out to your estimated location.  The Ark ship is functioning well thanks to the extra supplies and safety systems we were able to install.  Cryo functions have failed at expected rates of about 4% to date, however we have found a flaw in the systems and are working repair them.  (partial data recovery +10 to any cryogenic system rolls)

More then 150,000 lives will be counting on you when we arrive, your sacrifices and hardships will let us begin a new life and will not be forgotten.

+5 moral ongoing

Doesn't this ship have cameras?

Should be easy to find the perpetrator. Stealing supplies is a serious problem.
