Can't carve fortifications?

Well I never tried that before, I alaways built them.
Today I tried to carve some fortifications on a cavern wall(d F), but the marks didn't appear at all.

You have to smoot it before carving fortifications.

If you want a bit more Stone Detailing experience, you can even engrave it after smoothing it and then turn it into fortifications.
