cave adapting adventurers

If fortress dwarves can do it, why not adventurers? Dwarves and goblins would adapt fastest, elves the most slowly, humans as usual rest in the middle ground. Cave adaptation would give a further range of perception -- you may not read billboards at that distance, but you could tell a shrub from a draltha, if you knew what a draltha looked like.

It should already happen to dwarven adventurers, but you'll have to be underground for a long time. I did see a clam that dwarven adventurers can start with it, but I don't know.

Cave adaptation isn't actually a good thing. Cave adaptation is vomiting once you get exposed to sunlight after being underground for a long time. Dwarves are also the only ones to get cave adaptation as well. Even if it can't happen to adventurers, I don't think it matters much as it takes several months to start and I seriously doubt the viability of living in the caverns for several months as an adventurer.

It is possible. I've gotten lost in cavern levels for months while trying to locate where a demon had spawned from. Other players have spent game years trying to cross oceans from underground. There's plenty of prey to butcher and carve up down there, and fresh water frequently enough to survive enough without the pour exploit.

As for whether it's a good thing, it isn't supposed to be perfectly positive any more than it is for fortress dwarves. It's certainly a benefit if you've been down there for months and have no idea how much longer you'll be stuck there. Not so much when you get back to surface.

Actually, there are no advantages to cave adaptation, even while underground.

Really? I assumed there was some trade off for adapting staring into darkness, learning to navigate partially by echoes, getting used to dust from every surface filling your lungs, etc. Shouldn't cave adaptation make one more suited to inhabiting caves?

What does a draltha look like anyway? Ive always imagined them to be yellow fungus eating sausage cows with mould growing on them.

Does cave adaptation wear off?
It should have bonuses to sight and smell. You should also be able to eat vermin. Just.... for.... fun

It does wear off. Most dwarves stop vomiting after just a few days of sunlight.

According to the wiki, creatures with the [CAVE_ADAPT] token get bonuses in caves (presumably anywhere underground?), and are susceptible to cave adaptation. So just being able to become cave adapted appears to grant any bonuses that might be present, whereas the actual cave adaptation is purely a negative thing.

The fact that it doesn't actually say what those bonuses are, and that I've never seen these bonuses mentioned anywhere else except by people who assumed that cave adaptation would be a good thing and didn't do any research, makes that claim quite suspicious to me though.
