build vertical axles through fortifications

Or construct fortifications around them. If they have a hollow interior, why not? This way it doesn't take a 3 to 8 tile enclosure to protect them from rampaging destroyers.

I'm confused, are you suggesting the ability to build through a fortification or to build on top of one? Either way, it's a little silly to imagine dwarves shoving logs through tiny windows just large enough to shoot from while providing cover.

Being able to fortify and make impassible walls that allow axles to fit through does make sense, though.

Whole hydras can fall into them from above. Why not simply pass a log downward through that space? Or if the axle is already there, arrange your blocks around it when constructing a fortification.

This thread is about vertical axles, not horizontal axles.

There was a typo in the siegers' campfire code. When the fires went out, so did the game.

It still takes a log, and since that same log turned horizontal can extend up to 3 tiles long it can be assumed that the height of a tile is at least 3 times greater than the width/length are. And then the dwarves shove this 3x1x1 log through a slit in the wall just big enough to aim a crossbow. It's not quite as ridiculous as it would have been with single-tile trees, but I doubt it should be possible to put the log in after the bricks.

If the bricks went on last it'd be different, but at that point you may as well just build a regular wall on the axle rather than a fortification because the log's gonna be blocking the slit in the middle anyway.

We don't know exactly what a fortification tile looks like, other than the fact that you can fire through them at any angle. Stonesense depicts them like pylons, which is sensible enough. An axle could fit inside:

In other words, the slit's not necessarily in the middle.

There aren't many assumptions you could make about a fortification's structure based on its game mechanics -- it probably shouldn't permit a hydra to land inside it, but it does. Still, it wouldn't take a lot of dwarven ingenuity to design one that served the purpose of shielding machinery while allowing marksmen to aim ranged weapons through it.
