Hey, I was wondering if we couldn't standardize the tax rates between our various towns?

Sometimes high level players end up having to pay 600-1000gp just to enter a town. I'll let you know right now, i actively avoid such towns so you're definitely missing out on revenues, and it wastes turns for the other players since we're looking further afield to buy materials or sell weapons. This all induces unneeded inefficiency into the system.

My four towns of Dust Grove, Trueopen, Felllack, and Druiddrite are all set to 20gp base player fee, plus 7gp per level. Which works out at 150gp for a level 20 party to visit. If you have a per-level charge of 25-30 gp you should really drop this to something more reasonable.

Good idea.  I haven't been paying much attention to the party taxes in my three towns.  I'll lower them to something more reasonable when I can.

We should probably look towards cutting party taxes a lot in the near future. If you go slightly west to Cardolan or Staberinde, there are many towns that I can enter for less that 20gp, whereas to visit most other Bay12 towns costs around 400-600. As a result, I do all my shopping outside the country.

Given this discrepancy, I've just decided to slash the tax rates of my towns. I've set a base tariff of 25gp, and zero per-level fee. I think the high tariffs are actually counter-productive since other players will be avoiding our area like the plague, in favor of the much cheaper areas to the west. Hit people with max. sales tax once they're actually in your town.

Or we put all tax rates at maximum, and the taxes stay within our kingdom, and discourage others from shopping in our towns and purchasing any good equipment, recruiting any good characters that come along?  Or would the hit to prosperity for less visitors make this counterproductive?  And if we have inactive players they are sucking up taxes from more active players but not paying them back by being active and visiting other's towns.

No, that's not really going to work. I won't shop in any of your towns if that happens, and it screws over all lower level players who don't have towns. What if I'm looking for recruits and I need to check out 10 towns to find them? that's 10000gp then with that plan. It would certainly be counterproductive by driving all commerce away from the towns. Sure, recruits would pile up. But the problem is none of us will be able to afford to visit the towns on the off-chance of picking up a good recruit. I already get all my recruits from Cardolan and Staberinde towns already due to not being able to afford the party taxes in Armok.

If I need to resurrect a character, repair weapons, or sell loot, I can't just go to the nearest town if it costs me 1000+ gp just to get in. Why would I sell stuff when it costs me more money to get into the town that I make back. I'd just dump the gear in the wilderness then.

Yeah.. I basically hang around in stab territory now.  All my upkeep money goes to them.  Healing and repairing there is insanely cheap compared to bay12 cities.  I know to some of you guys it's chump change but to the newbies its the difference between making money on a dungeon run and breaking even.

I think the main problem is, we cannot see how much our own towns actually cost...
I know that I've complained to Reelya before about prices.  I have no clue what the rates for Reelya's towns were.   But yea, I left my taxes at 10/10.  How much does it cost you to get into Chapel Forest (71, 60)?  And if you could answer, your level too, for reference.

Communication is key.  If you want to know how much your town fees actually costs for people, just ask.

Zangi, yours aren't too bad on the scale of things. Will cost me 270gp per visit @ level 26. Which is much better than the 400-600 on most other blue cities.

After you complained the first time, I dropped the per-level rate on mine from the default of 10 to 7 (with a base of 20). Yesterday I decided to just flat-rate all of them though at 25gp.

And then I just realize that there is some sort of cost calculator at the bottom that I normally just glaze over.  But yea, I guess town owners need to be made aware... the actual cost doesn't hit home cause the entry taxes does not effect them.

My latest dungeon run has earned around 100k, with maybe 2 or 3 trips to nearest town to repair and offload loot.  10k spent on browsing cities while significant is still quite affordable.  Visiting a few towns to browse at current rates of 400/town at the moment is cheap

And personally while I'd be happy to set my tax rates as low as everyone thought best to give the lower level players a fair chance, I wouldn't dream of doing something as selfish as spending in enemy towns and boosting their coffers to save myself a few pennies from higher costs of paying to enter ally towns when the money is going straight to an ally anyway.

I'm the best example of a newbie since I just started out and am level 2, I can certainly say I avoid Armok blue area like the plague because it costs me 200 gp just to get in when grinding mobs gets me 500 gp max. And this is hundreds of turns worth of wandering the wilderness, turning in quests and resurrecting my party. Not going to force anyone to lower taxes, but just making a statement that extremely high taxes is like if a store inflated their prices by 500% in comparison to their competitors thinking it would make them more money int he long run.

I'm level 5-ish now, I can only make money on my runs if I go to a stab town.  Call me selfish all you want, I'm still not gonna go to your town.
