What makes you think the shadows exist when we aren't there? Like I said, they aren't flesh and blood. Probably. Think of them like ghosts. Drowning, burning, or just nuking them won't work because they aren't flesh and blood creatures. Considering the things they are a metaphor for, it would make since things like that would never work.

You do realize that the crux of the idea is that the PCs get paid to dispose of the waste in Achronos right? The long term-management is more of just an afterthought
Back on the corpse disposal idea, even if they do bear the wounds of Achronos, blasting them with magic should render them pretty damn hard to trace to any source.

Off the top of my head, I know one that fights with a war fan with physical skills. His magic skills was raising it into the air and physical was a swing.
