Something I forgot to note: Unless your "B" button is broken or you have the literal worst reflexes/timing, Adept is broken as hell. The monster basically cannot hit you once you learn the timing. Makes the game even easier, although it is quite useful for grinding an armor set.

When I first saw Adept style I thought it gave you evasion +3 by default. After using it I've realized that, instead, if you get hit during any of your invincibility frames you will automatically do an Absolute Evade (which has tons of I-frames) then go into the sprint thing. I initially thought that the evade spin thing didn't have I-frames. So Evasion + skills aren't useless, they just make it even more trivial.

I've been using Longsword a bit and Adept makes things a fair bit easier for me. I always had trouble landing the final hit of the spirit combo because of how long it takes to get there even with the run-in slash, but being able to do it in 3 quick hits after an evade is great.

As someone who plays Adept Longsword 70% of the time and Adept Charge Blade the other 30%, I can comfortably say that Adept style is pretty insanely good. It won't stop you from getting greedy and being punished for attacking too much, but it does allow you to get out of really dangerous situations that normal evades could never save you from, which enables you to be a lot more aggressive.

That said, it's not always the most fun style. Thanks to the addition of hunter arts, I find myself playing Guild Longsword at times, too, because I like to have both Sakura Slash and Critical Juncture available just to feel like a badass.

Additionally, the adept evades don't work perfectly on some monsters that have combo attacks. For example, against Brachy, if you dodge the first punch on his two-punch combo move, he'll often punish your adept evade with the second punch while you're stuck in the adept evade running animation.

tl;dr - it's not the end-all be-all, but it is extremely powerful.

I liked 4U better. While it wasn't as flashy, I always felt a lot cooler.

While the previous monster hunters didn't look very flashy, the growing pile of hunting games from other developers usually tried to be as flashy and spammy as possible. I always preferred monster hunter because of its no nonsense approach to combat with every move being a calculated action, no spamming filler moves. Every time I hear the next MH game is flashier I fear it will lose this edge since Capcom has shown that they have no idea how to handle their other franchises(resident evil failure, not making megaman games anymore...). Not sure about generations yet, but the previous games at least didn't screw it up.

I do hope they don't go too overboard with the next game, the anime-esque arts are about as much anime as I can handle in this already fairly anime game. I've only been playing since 3u but the trend seems to be that they throw in some new concepts each game, and if they don't work they get (switch)axed in the next game. Swimming was removed between 3u and 4u, but the jumping in 4u was preserved in Gen. Greatsword didn't even have a charge mechanic in the earlier games but now it's pretty much the main (critical)draw to the weapon. I hope styles/arts don't get preserved in the next game, at least not without a major overhaul to how it works. I agree with Nighthawk in that each weapon should have gotten their own unique styles instead of giving every weapon the same four styles, even if it means we have to drop a few styles from some weapons or completely revamp them. So far I do like the upgrade mechanic, and the prowler mode gives people a more traditional RPG style game where your character levels up which is a nice even if it can get pretty convoluted with all the skills and such.

On the other hand I'm still in 4 star village...

I'm sure like me you probably thought the meowstress was some little girl, but I have given it some thought.

The thing is she very well might be a young adult or even middle-aged, seeing as wyverians live a very long time. Also based on the cat grannies(who also have cat ears under their hats) and some other wyverians we know that they can be midgets. What some of you may not know from the lore is that the wyverians(and the hunters) were genetically engineered and modified all sorts of ways during a previous apocalyptic war against dragons. They probably just made a subspecies of the midget wyverians with cat ears to recruit cats more easily. Odd that Meowstress has only four fingers in the higher res render, considering her model in-game definitely has five (you can see her hand clearly during the credits song cutscene).

Also, I don't think her cat "ears" are ears at all. They don't appear to have an opening anywhere to receive sound, and she already has a pair of regular ears, so it's more likely that they're either A) just a protrusion on her head that is a result of genetic modification shenanigans, or B) a cat-ears headband of sorts.

I wasn't aware of the fact that hunters were genetically modified. That loosely explains why I can tank explosions directly to the face and be fine after drinking some juice. Not saying Monster Hunter gives a crap for realism (it really doesn't) but hey, it's kind of nice to have an excuse other than, "It's a game, lol."

Yeah and if you put the pieces together their ancestors most likely also used artian mail suits as power armor... The hunters are the descendants of bio-engineered superhuman warriors from a now destroyed high-tech civilization. They were basically fantasy space marines minus the space.

Edit: Keep in mind that this stuff for the most part isn't 100% canon since the games don't directly make any mention of the stuff because:
A: History was lost to the survivors of the war
B: Early in the series capcom decided they wanted to keep the game cheerful and mysterious and kind of put that backstory aside.

I've started experimenting with prowler mode, but i'm not liking the repetitive meta boomerang build so I'm trying out melee/hybrid. Do you guys and gals have any interesting melee prowler setups? How about the two palicos that will tag along, how do you set those up? More damage, support/utility?

The only thing I don't like about the hunter arts is the activation method. If they where worked into the weapon's combo it would be much better and reactive in my opinion.

The universal studios special palico has the ability to get super attack while the monster is enraged. It's also a healer. You can get a fighter palico levelled up so it can teach the healer demon horn or shit like that to become amazing. Multiplayer guys love it.

Other than that I usually just run around and smack monsters a bit then run off and do buffs. It's not particularly complicated and it's pretty hard to die as a palico due to how mobile they are and the fact that they get three lives per life. (I like the amusing little gameplay pun Capcom did there with nine lives.) Oh, and unlimited healing. Cause that shit is tight.

It's worth noting that if you sleep at base camp as a Prowler, you get all your acorns back.

Oh, it's a small thing, but I am thoroughly and inexplicably entertained every time I get a new encounter and the monster is introduced with name plastered on-screen in a manner fitting a Tarantino movie.
