I still play for a week or so per month. I'm really bad at it though :v
Same.  I'm still at that volcano place with the ancient jungle and getting thwomped by pretty much anything stronger than a mook (and sometimes those, too).  If I ever went online, I'd just be a horrible load to whomever I get teamed up with, and I'm pretty sure no one's still this early in the story anymore, anyways.
One thing that helped me a lot--have you tried a bunch of different weapons in the level 1 training quests? I've found that the weapons I thought were the coolest actually fit my playstyle very poorly. I initially thought that I was a more "tanky" kind of player, so I tried stuff like Lances and Charge Blades, but after getting killed for the umpteenth time by the Gypceros, I tried out the entire melee weapon list until I found out I'm much more of a speedy sort and work better with Dual Swords, Insect Glaives, and the like.

I don't use Bay12 much anymore. PM me if you need to get in touch with me and I'll send you my Discord handle.

And don't stick to the same weapon all the time.
I mean, I literally breathed Bowguns for a while, but then I moved to GS, then to SA, then CB... I've ended up with weapons in all categories anyway.

I think everyone learns to love most of the weapons in MH eventually.

I was a loyal and unwavering GS user, then I converted to almost purely CB, and have only recently discovered that SnS and HBG are super fun for me.

It's cool to see that every weapon in MH is appealing and highly viable if you take the time to learn it. It's also cool that people have so many differing preferences. Sure, GS is extremely popular with a lot of people, Horn is pretty underrated, etc., but you'll find players of every weapon if you stick around for a while.

I've tried most of them.  The Horn is pretty much the only one that I'm halfway decent at; my problem really is a "git gud" sort of thing, since I can't dodge or roll worth a darn.

The only problem with playing every weapon is that you don't have enough save slots for them.

Meanwhile I've used nothing but SnS since 2005. :P

Which was kinda hard mode in the first game. Even high rank stuff now feels easier than low rank MH1, though I'm not sure how much of that is SnS rebalance and how much is the games getting easier in general. I remember timing out on quests in the offline story being a major concern for me, and that was about as easy as the game got. (Especially goddamn Rathalos, who would literally fly around the top of the sky not interacting with anything for 20 out of the 50 minutes while those precious seconds ticked down...) My beginner lancer friend was getting kills in literally half the time. Good times...

...I just got this game for Christmas, and I'm pretty limited in how much I can play in a day, so I'm still relatively early. Might be able to play with someone someday, for a quest or two.

I use mostly Dual Blades, but sometimes use Hammer or Charge Blade.

Of course, Twin is neither man nor woman but an unholy eldritch abomination like every other Bay12er. The difference is they hide it better.

To be fair I'm usually hovering around Switch Axe or Lance.

A problem with 'use all weapons' for some people is also farming materials, and money. Yes, making money is easy, but it's fairly slow.

Huh. I've never had any issues with my playstyle, usually because I'm not playing the game properly :P

Hammers are great to have around if they're doing their job properly. I once went online against a Deviljho with this hammer user guy thinking, "oh, a hammer against Deviljho, this should be hilarious."

The dude went practically untouched, got several stuns, and uppercutted me three times, every time at the perfect moment to hand me free aerial hits which ultimately led to several mount->stun combos.

And all I was doing most of the time was hacking at its legs with sword-mode Charge Blade, feeling like a total chump.

So... yeah. A good hammer user can be downright badass.
