I'm nto familiar with exhaust since if that mechanic was in Mh1 it wasn't transparent.  I get that you can tire monsters out but how do you do it?  I guess that's why near-dead monsters spend a lot of time doing nothing?

Certain attacks cause exhaust damage. Monsters have stamina based on low/high/G, and they use it up with big attacks more or less? For the most part, monsters getting tired is a thing that happens, but happens faster if your weapon does exhaust damage. As monsters hit a stamina crash they'll try and regain stamina by eating things and so they're free to hit in that period. Well, unless they eat you.

For the most part see if a monster is drooling, that's a sign their stamina is low and their attacks are less effective, plus they end up in traps longer.

The more monsters attack, the more they burn stamina, and unlike characters their stamina doesn't just regenerate.  Weapon types will sometimes deal exhaust damage as their element.  Exhausted creatures will pant, and then drool.  During this time they'll seek out food, which hunters can place raw meat, cooked meat, or poisoned meat as traps.  An exhausted creature will spend a lot more time standing still and looking around.  A great way to deal with annoying monsters is to tank them for a good 10 minutes, then they'll exhaust themselves and be fairly easy to take down afterwards, as they attack less and jump around less.

Can I just say hunting horns with healing are the best thing since sliced bread? Delivering a beatdown while you restore lost health is simply amazing.

Even better when you have friends with you and they're constantly receiving the heals.

Trying to get a basic high rank weapon and armor set. I farmed a bunch of Kut-Ku for their bits, but I still need stoutbones and some small monster stuff.

The best quest I have for stoutbones is Emerald Congalala. Stupid fart monkey.
Are you aware of this site?

It's like the best wiki ever, except the lack of screenshots.

How do you get to high rank so quickly? Do you go online alot or grind the guild quests till its high rank? Or maybe I'm just slow.

Well, take your time with it. I've had the game for a while and am still just at high rank. Different people advance at different rates, plus I've got University to handle as well as hunts. Generally, you advance faster the quicker you master the basics.

It's been quite awhile since it came out though.

I've just been casually doing whatever but I'm HR5.

I fought Kirin. Probably hands down the easiest and most boring fight in the game. I don't think I took a single point of damage. Just ran around in circles.

I just beat up Dalamadur and now I'm rank 62. I also got what looks like Mark of a Hero 2.0, but I really don't want to deal with it, plus I need to fight more of those special rank 7+ guys like Molten and Gold Rathian. Good fun, though.
