A nice French guy helped me get to HR5 after a string of idiots kept dying to the pink Rathian.

I wanted to help him get to HR5 too but he said no need.

Walk in

See Gore Magala

What do?  This thing is kicking my ass.  For one I've only got 25 minutes, and I just can't seem to catch a break when fighting it.  Hurting it enough apparently takes off its rage but I feel like it's impossible to hurt it while it's raging, everything it does kills me.  I mostly ignore the black pollen since if I paid attention to that as well I'd literally never have time to swing my sword at it.  Not to mention swinging apparently makes it go away.

I've gotten it pretty close though.  The only time I've tried multiplayer was a disaster and we lost horribly.  I do pretty okay as long as it's not raging but once it's raging I have a lot of trouble hurting it.  I've heard its rage is tied to the pollen, is there a way to slow its rage or end it prematurely?  I feel like every time I've seen it drop its rage it was right after a good hit to the head.

I"m also still using the greatsword.  How important would you guys say charged attacks are?  I can almost never get a fully charged attack before it hits me or moves out of the way, even if I knock it down first.  I"m mostly going old school and just hitting it with running unsheath attacks.

Are you talking about the Gore battle in the boat?

No, the demo fight.  It's in ancestral steppe and is just a standard hunt.

Edit:  Oops, standard hunt minus 25 minutes.  25 minutes to kill it isn't a lot when you've just started playing.

No, the demo fight.  It's in ancestral steppe and is just a standard hunt.

Circle clock-wise around it and try to stay somewhat under it. It's attacks tend to hit towards it's left and in front of it, so you should be safe.

The black mist can actually help you, so long as you attack him enough. If you check under your name, you may see a bar that slowly fills. That means you got infected by the black mist. If it fills completely, you lose natural healing. If you do enough damage, though, you get an attack boost and temporary immunity from further infection.

Whenever it rages you just need to wait for an opportunity. It helps if you know your weapon well, so that you know what you can an can't do, but if you have doubts then just wait for an opening to hit.

Oh I was wondering where you fight him with only 25 mins.

Anyways, greatswords aren't really my cup of tea. Gore is pretty much your introduction to fast monsters and your intro to the virus mechanic. It really pushes you to be aggressive if you want that sweet bonus and avoid the penalty. Hitting his face is pretty much the only way to snap him out of super murder rage. His super murder rage is when his horns are out and uses his wings as extra legs. You need to break his horns for stuff and its only out when his in super murder rage mode.

If you can't dodge Gore Magala you need to block his attacks. Tanking him = ded.

Dodge / block after every attack until you understand his patterns.

He's actually not too bad after awhile as he spends an inordinate amount of time walking around compared to some other dragons (*cough* Ratholos *cough*). You can dodge circles around him to avoid most of his attacks though you need to watch out for the tail swing. As for the frenzy virus, just hit him until it purges itself or eat a nulberry to buy time.

I gotta get back into blocking, yeah.  I almost never blocked in MH1 with the greatsword, I just dodged, but it feels like this greatsword has a different playstyle than that one, what with no charging and no more infinite combos.  It also feels like the sheathing and unsheathing is less fluid than in MH1.  I could usually get my sword sheathed and start sprinting fast enough to avoid a lot of attacks

If I'm not gonna block I may as well longsword but I don't want to longsword.  Time to learn to block I guess.

The new item menu on the touchscreen is great. I have it along the top with the left slot being mega potions and right slot being nulberries (which will buy you more time if the Frenzy is about to take hold). Middle two slots can either be lifepowder, herbal medicine, deodorant, whatever would come in handy for any given fight. I wish you could have more than one item bar, or at least use both the small and large item bars for more items on the touch screen.

I still find the timing to dodge attacks is too narrow for me, I can't dodge much of anything without using the panic dive. Maybe one day I'll have an evasion talisman.

By the way, feel free to give me a poke if you want help getting through guild hall quests, I still have low gear armor/weapon for that unless you really want me to use my higher rank stuff XD.

EDIT: I am so sad when blue rocks spawn outside the area I can go to in expeditions.

There's still the infinite combo, you just can't use two of the same attack in a row. So you could downswing X, sideswing A, downswing X, and so on forever. And it's perfectly fine to not block with GS because it's not all that great and you'll lose sharpness. Do it when you have to, but don't be like a lancer.

I want this too. :(

I did an egg mission with some random dude. I don't think the guy knew what he was getting into. It was a HR5 one where you had to carry powderstone. Aka the stuff that kills you while you carry it. He failed like 8 times trying to get out of the area due to a Rathalos camping it. When the Rathalos roars, you drop the stone.

At the end I think he gave up and changed his strategy. Basically he would just escort me around and warn me of dangers and lure threats away from me.

It was pretty great impromptu teamwork.

Oh man, I hate how much I like the longsword.  It's so... easy?

I almost killed it this time, the only reason I lost is because somewhere halfway through the fight I lost track of my inventory and died trying to pull something out.

What is this crap?

I remember seeing you automatically do this in the cutscene Great Jaggi was introduced but I never knew it was an actual game mechanic. I've been sheathing and manually latching onto walls this whole time when I wanted to jump off.

The best kind. Well, I still screw it up from time to time, so it gets me almost killed, but it's very useful. Shaving off sheathing time for greatswords and chargeblades is a pretty good deal, but since the lance only gets a sidestep you can't quite use the lance for that.

The longsword is a pretty fun beginner weapon. I'd say try the sword and sheild though, or the hammer. Hammer hits to the head cause enemies to get stunned, and this is great when you're fighting the gore magala. If you can manage a mount while it's frenzied and can knock it down, whaling on it with the hammer to the head should do wonders. Anything that deals impact damage usually also deals exhaust damage, so it will slow enemies down too.
