Finished writing this up ages ago, was deciding on exposition method.
Actually, all these lantern fiddling is kind of dumb so I integrated it into the choices. The lantern is now both on and off, depending on convenience.
A single, titanic eye stare at you in the midst of its snarl of disturbingly human appendages. A vast number of crimson-feathered wings make up for most of its bulk. Looking at it, you realize that the being is bigger than the room. Bigger than anything you can imagine, in fact. Yet, it somehow occupies the corner of the cell. You avert your eyes as if staring at it too much will get you crushed in its sheer immensity. That, and because the thing you accidentally glimpsed under the wings made your eyes' sockets bleed.
Now that you think about it... was that a woman's face you saw? As you turn off the light of the lantern, you find that the being faded back into a shapeless darkness. It can't just be the lighting.
