Carnivorous Plants
« on: February 10, 2015, 01:54:51 pm »

Title says it all. Carnivorous plants. Possibly some really big ones that could eat wildlife, including dorfs. I think that those ones would be in evil jungles, though. Or just savage jungles. I dunno. But it would be so cool.

I dont know how I feel about this...

But a fortress that has a garden filled with carnivorous plants sounds like a good defense method

You can make plant-like IMMOBILE creatures, which is basically the same.  Except for growing them from seeds.

+1 to this!  Carnivorous plants would be awesome, whether we're talking realistic venus-flytraps for insect control or Audrey II-style monstrosities for !!fun!!.

Carnivorous plants aren't possible yet, I dont think.  You could try making a creature that doesn't move, (I havent this version), but I had made a creature that only moves with regards to combat last version.

I currently use a creature made of plant materials and moves very slow.

Impossible?  Said who?  Maybe it could be done as a plant material Trap that grows from seeds.  That's basically how they function irl, anyway.

But . . . they don't make the babies due to not being able to reach one another . . .

You know what?  I haven't tried since separate attack/moves were put in.  In 34 the immobile critters were aquatic or couldn't reproduce.

I like this idea. Some should also exist in the caves.

With so many giant exotic plants in the caves, that might just be where the giant dwarf-eating ones could live.

I made a carnivorous plant that does reproduce (piranha plants for my Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom mod).  They are creatures that start out as immobile spores, transform (through a self-targeting interaction) into mobile juveniles, and then 'take root' 3 months later.  Most of them mate in their mobile phase, and the females will give birth a few months after maturing.

But it would be cool if you could actually plant them, get seeds, etc.  They'd function basically the same as creatures, but would spawn on the tile when the plant matured.

If we're gonna plant them, it'd be better if we could completely forbid certain tiles of the map for our dwarves so they won't go near them.

It would be nice to have venus fly traps/pitcher plant like monstrosity.  You could place them in your food stockpile and they would eat all the vermin, both protecting your food AND disposing of the remains!  No need to worry about cat reproduction, no need to haul the vermin corpses away constantly.

Give the seeds to the elves.  The really big dorf eating ones sound like something you'd find in an evil jungle or a the third cavern layer though.
