Synced folders, clouds?
« on: February 10, 2015, 01:20:03 pm »

I'm thinking about doing a better job of organizing my files on my home computer.

I'd like to be able to have a bunch of folders in windows explorer that are synced/backed up offsite in a semi-invisible manner.  I'd like those files to be encrypted client side, and stored in an encrypted state on the offsite storage.  Ideally I'd like it to be pretty easy to use.

I think dropbox might have something like this, but the encryption is important to me.  I don't want the NSA to find all my ISIS-grandma porn.   :P

I'm also open to software I can run on a server.  I've got a web-server I can use if it comes down to it.

Does something like this exist?  Any recommendations?

https://owncloud.org/

OwnCloud will do just about everything that Dropbox does, and it's free. File encryption, secure-channel communications, the whole shebang. You'd have to be more than passingly familiar with Linux to get it up and configured the way you like, but once it's up it's up.

Is there a reason you'd like to encrypt the files before you store them? You can configure OwnCloud to accept sync over SSL, then just have the server keep all its internals encrypted on the drive. Using SSL to encrypt communications is much easier than having your own stuff encrypted before it gets uploaded.

Minecraft's fine, your computer just sucks.

I don't really trust servers to manage their own encryption.  One letter from the US government and they pretty much are required by law to give their encryption keys and not tell anyone.

1. Encrypt file on your own computer
2. Stick file on the sync-drive-thingy
3. ???
4. Profit

I'd like it to be fairly hands-free.  I don't want to be encrypting all my files manually constantly, as I'm using my files constantly.

With Owncloud you can set up your own server. Then it's up to you to ignore that letter from the US government requesting encryption keys, rather than some 3rd party :)

Thanks for pointing me at owncloud, I'm going to give it a try myself :)

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Hmm, I found this https://www.syncany.org/ , although it looks like its still in Alpha.  Supposedly it syncs to a variety of sources, including ftp, so I might give that a shot.
