I figured that's what he meant.  People who can control the minds of others will join performing troupes and astound audiences by hypnotizing other people.  I gave him the ability to control minds, but I restricted the range a bit.  So, he astounded audiences by exerting control over the only mind he could; his own.  It was intended.
