The alternate definition of consequence is result.

You do everything you can, with no result. You try to befriend someone only for them to think as if you weren't there at all - air. You play a game to discover buttons do not react to your input. You attempt... cruel things only for them to survive, and not suffer any single injury.

You try to kill yourself only to end up living and enjoying no pain. Soon enough, reality tries to correct the inconsistency, and you also go blind too. And you lose control of your limbs. And breathing. And you suddenly can't think about anything but the current and your agony of having been able to feel nothing.
