Dwarves don't like loading minecarts
« on: February 08, 2015, 03:51:42 pm »

I have a minecart sitting on a track stop in the middle of a stockpile next to my depot, ready to take all that yummy iron and bronze crap down to the magma smelters. Only problem is, no one will load it. Yes, all the settings are 100% perfect.

By the way, I have a minecart dump based trash compactor that the dwarves also have trouble using - they'll ignore it for a season then swarm and empty the stockpile all in one go, but they have yet to do this with the proper hauling carts.

Minecarts no longer haul metals. It's a current bug that's being worked on.

How so? I see anything about that neither at wiki nor in bugtracker. And since 34.08 when they have been allowed to haul items I don't see any such changes in this area in devlog.

There is a report 6219: Minecart hauling times are occasionally ignored.

Dunno about hauling, but minecarts work just fine for stationary quantum stockpiles.  I've got one for metal and coal bars in my smelters right now, and they get loaded just fine.

Yeah that bug is completely unrelated. The one route set to haul on a schedule does go... it's just always empty. I haven't noticed dwarves not pushing it on time but they may well be messing up the schedule. It's more the refusal to load things from the full piles all around each stop. And I have also loo(k)ed around the track stops for huge piles of items imdicatimg I accidentally set things to dump, but nada

Have you tried dactivating all labours besides the relevant hauling and cart pushing? I noticed that sometime after 40.19,  at least in 40.23/24, many jobs are not done if others are activated on the same dwarf. I also had a similar minecart problem as you have but I simply gave up.

The relevant labours are every type of hauling except wood and food :/ I can try turning on just furniture hauling and see if that gets them loading the anvils.

Make a burrow with all stockpiles you want to load that minecart and assign some dwarves with hauling labor to it. That way they should only haul items from and to that area, putting it in the minecart.

Whenever I used burrows in 34.11 I found all I got was cancel spam. Has that been fixed? Also turning off everything but vehicle hauling and furniture hauling succeeded in getting a single anvil into the minecart. Huzzah! I really need this stuff shifted down to the magma since I've exhausted my supply of wood for charcoal, but at this point it's starting to look like it might be easier to shift the magma up instead.

I will try to burrow a hauler in the stockpile and see if he cancel spams me to death, if not then it should be problem solved. At least I know they can load minecarts, and it's just dwarven laziness preventing everything from going smoothly.

EDIT: success! The burrow worked, the single hauler managed to get the cart 13% full before I got impatient and added a timer. There is no cancellation spam - burrows officially work fine. Next migrant wave I see a lot of haulers.

Thanks Toady!
