A larder is the part of a manor, castle, or other large residence where perishable foods were kept under cool conditions. Hence, "lard"er. Though I believe other types of food were stored there as well, there may have been a separate pantry for foods that could be stored at room temperature. I know this because I've designed mansions and castles.
