I'm kind of new to dwarf fortress, so I don't know if this is a stupid question or not but.. can you play as other creatures besides Evles, Dwarfs, and Humans? I've always wanted to play as a dragon

Yes you can.
I can help you if you ask nicely

Go to the raws.
Go to entitys.
Look for the human entity file. They should have an [indiv control] just copy and paste it into other civ files, make a new world because the old one uses original raw files and have fun playing an outsider of any race.
To play as a normal adventurer look for the, [adventure tier #] and copy paste that but change the number of it.
For more indepth modding hop on over to the modding threads.
And us adventurers have got to stic together.

Btw playing as a dragon is fun.

You may want to mod in wings so you can fly, dragons in dwarfy fortress are wingless.
But still powerful. You will also get hungry because you cant grasp anything to eat (yes its silly)
You could give your front feet the [grasp] tag.

I'm having trouble on finding the human entity thing. I remember seeing it before, and seeing the indiv control thing, but I can't find it now...
Edit: found it. Now time to find the dragon one.
Edit: Confused on where to paste it. Doesn't seem like there is a place I should put it??

entity_default.txt has the civs in it.

any playable creature needs to have an entity/civ. So you duplicate the section of entity_default.txt which has humans in it, change the race to DRAGON or any other creature from the raws. You probably don't want all the details from the human civ to just get a playable dragon though, because that might spawn an entire dragon civ, and you probably don't want that. I'm not 100% sure of the bare minimum of tokens you need to define a playable dragon's entity (entity is like a faction basically). You should get rid of all the BIOME related tags, then the new entity won't be placed in any biome to start with, so won't appear in your game.

Yes that makes sense to me. But it's weird because of the weapon descriptions and such... like mace, etc. Same with armor. If I kept those then wouldn't I be a dragon with armor and weapons? Do I just remove those with it?

anything not relevant to your creature that's in the entity will mostly get ignored, don't worry about it. Those things control what items a civ can build. If you're just spawning an adventurer from a "bogus" civ you created the game won't even ever look at those things.

They are each surrounded with an entity code thing. Do I just make up my own entity? like [ENTITY:AWESOME]?

Yeah the civ name wont matter you just need a civ type so the game recognises that its playable.
Most my editing of the raws where from looking at the files, playing around and the modding thread andd I havent stuffed up yet.

No luck. i even created a new world. I went to the create a character section, and it was the same. My civ file is the same, but I added this to the end (like told):

Edit 2: Holy crap. My dreams came true. I am a dragon outsider. Thank you guys for the help!

Edit 3: Help. Something weird is going on... I spawned inside of a fortress.. there is 4 doors but I can't go into any of them... I'm stuck!

Lol can you please spoiler the raws.

Some forts are shut in without an exit or the exit is very hard to find.

You know so gobs cant kill you.
Make another dragon that starts at a hamelt.
And remember the fort you spawned in and never go their again.

Thanks. Just got done burning down a bunch of elves. Figured out I can eat because I can't butcher. Was traveling.. slept then a bunch of bogeyman killed me... lol

Well.. turns out I actually can't open doors. I went to some dwarf fortresses.. couldn't open any doors and go into the fortress. Also, I can't butcher.. I should be able to butcher things.. I'm a dragon. Says I have nothing to butcher with.. how am I supposed to eat? Any help?

Do dragons have building_destroyer? idk if PC's can use that via a command.

But it was suggested to also mod the dragon earlier to have grasp on their front legs. did you try that?
