Recruiting Companions

What do you guys look for when recruiting companions?

Normally I look for edge weapon users who are scrawny/thin (or best wiry) as I want them to have speed. Incredibly muscular NPCs can sometimes break grips set by grapplers, but that's always been hit or miss (alongside the damage sponge factor of high muscle). Speed affects a wider variety of needs. I also look for edge weapons as low skill works best with edge and opponent limb destruction is always helpful.

From a flavor perspective, a few months ago I started a dwarf in a camp (comprised of pretty much an entire dwarf civ) over a trench that also happened to be the home of a night troll. The night troll was swarmed and cut down by one of the weapon dwarves. I force quit to see what would happen in various iterations. It was always either an axe or swordsdwarf who landed the kill. That's what started the preference for edge, before any thinking went into it.

Someone willing to die a glorious death
Children
Demigods (seriously her name was tamed and I checked the legends and she was a demigod, i thought that was a PC thing)
Pikemen. Lashers. Wrestlers as a tar unit (holding them up)
I have companions always killing the wild life.

"I once shot a turtle in a field just to watch it die."
'Yeah, I know, I was there, it literally just now happened, I'm still confused about this whole thing.'
"I told you I wanted glory or a heroic death, didn't I?"
'How was any part of you kicking a turtle to death heroic or glorious?'
"He bit my toe off, I think he probably felt pretty heroic about that."
'...fair enough, by the way, you gonna eat that toe?'

Gonna sound odd, but I go for people who don't have any family to leave behind. Y'see, after I... lost a very skilled, 60-year-old lasher in 0.34, who happened to be happily married for 40 years, whose wife was still alive, who happened to be right next to her husband after I dragged him off into the wilds, and after I processed all of that, I kind of felt like a dick.

In short, if there's nobody who's going to miss them when they die horrible horrible deaths, they're fair game to me. Unless they're children. No kids.

Generally swordsmen or crossbowmen from villages I don't like very much.

Or the first person I find when I have no companions and am in the middle of nowhere - gotta keep the bogeymen away, yo.
