War gorillas in armor would be pretty awesome. Playing Planet of the apes.

In war, I'd probably feel most comfortable on an elephant or rhinoceros.  If a dwarf were going to ride a horse, they'd probably just ride a smaller sturdier breed than we are used to.  "Horse" is a very unspecific term.
Right. Rhynos would be pretty cool. They're kind of armored already though.

But someone pointed out in the military strategy megathread that the dwarves' military might comes from fighting in small spaces, using traps and pikes and all that stuff. Mounts would probably be less mighty in a tight fortress hallway.

Tight fortress hallways that are nonetheless sufficient for dragons, titans and forgotten beasts to pass through with ease.  Assuming the rhino fits in a hallway at all, it should be more dangerous if you can't get around to its side.

Steel full plate elephants. Like in Fortress Defense. (Would be gamebreakingly good, though)

I approve. This should probably wait until the mounts release though...

Posting to show support.

Also, why stop at armour? What about adding platforms and mechanical things too?

The new interface for making armour sized for non-dwarf citizens makes this suggestion a lot easier to implement now.

Sure.  Keep in mind that the game doesn't differentiate between, say, humanoids, ungulates, snakes and felids, it just sees body parts and sizes.  So unless there is a new way to add a new body type class to creature raws, you wouldn't be able to make armor that would fit more than one species, but not every species of the same size.

Currently, armor already stores the species the armor was made for, so I don't think it would be difficult to simply add the species as a prefix when the armor is not your own race's (elven breastplate, human trousers, horse helmet) although this could lead to weirdness like dwarves wearing the armor of a dwarf sized animal, it would be acceptable at least until we get a more realistic armor size and shape system (that takes child sizes into account, for example).

Lets not forget that dragon armour and lava crab armour (oh god why) would need to be sufficient to survive extreme heat. And under other circumstances, having armour equipped *or horribly fused into their bodies with liquid metal or cauterising hot iron spikes if we are thinking brutal hardcore methods probably reserved for goblins* should make animals more vulnerable to maces (reasonable counter when armour clad cave dragons arrive) and generally slower and easier to tire gaitwise for balancing purposes unless rigorously trained and expert in battle.

I don't think animals should randomly appear with armor, unless they're part of a siege.  Some intelligent being should have to make armor for them.  Also, I think all metals are magma safe and dragonfire safe already.

Dwarfs should forge armor only for war-trainable animals.
I think this is logical, as if dwarfs judge an animal not suitable for war training, why should they forge armor for it?
On the other hand though, this should lead to revising the list of war-trainable animals.
