Seriously, if you are going to make aluminum powder you might as well just buy it straight. It's only somewhat more expensive than the foil, doesn't mess up your blender, and is often much higher quality since the companies that make it can control the amount of oxygen in the production area (and thus how much of it has already reacted) with more precision than "open the blender lid every 10 minutes or so to stop it from bursting into flames when you do open the lid". Store bought powder also has zero chance of bursting into flame while you are making it.

That said aluminum powder isn't just used for explosives/welding (though that's what most of it's purposes are for). It's also used in a few other things like say, making your own metallic-looking paint.

I asked him if he was making thermite, and he said "I've done it before" then went on to tell me about how I can't watch what he's doing, how it's too dangerous, and how some people have to do things they don't want to do.

He's making some fucking thermite.
That's no big deal. Sometimes the only available place to build a bonfire is underwater.

Yeah, looking through the news doesn't bring up any thermite-related terrorist attack.

Could you use thermite to burn through a safe? I'm not really read-up on my thermite applications.

Maybe she wants to make chaff to confuse radars? Are \they\ looking for you too?

She says it's for my dad. My dad's a handy-man, but the only use I could think of for powdered aluminum is thermite, and I doubt that they need thermite.

She refuses to tell me anything else, what do?

If it was thermite, he wouldn't need tin. Probably welding.
Contrary to the name, tinfoil is not actually tin. Food-wrapping foil is usually aluminum.

Yeah, though the full story is that it was tin before WWII, but Aluminium became cheaper and more durable. The name had already stuck though, just like "tin cans" which some people call any can no matter what it's made of.

Yeah. Of course, if you're not carefule, you'll end up with the booty full of thermite.

What people call "tins" are actually tin-plated steel. So they're not entirely wrong.

Sounds like your family is trolling you dude.  Like when my dad told my sister that the girl from The Grudge lived behind her headboard and then later made that throaty noise it made in the movie.

Cue global catastrophe.
