Bay12 Travel Thread
« on: February 06, 2015, 04:26:58 pm »

So this is Bay12. We've got people from all over the world, and some great travellers. This thread is to share advice about particular countries/cities, from locals or people that traveled there.

So next, I'm going to Amsterdam and Sarajevo. Any nice place, bars, stuff to see in those place? Anyone wants to meet for a drink?

My ex-wife is going to Madras in May. Any one know a good Thuggee cult I kid, I kid!  :P

But seriously, she has a serious sensitivity to capsicum, and in my experience south Indian dishes are loaded with chilis. Any suggestions for what dishes she should be steering towards to avoid any incident with chilis?

PTW

I can help with the US because I live here and also with some general west/mid Europe things (I lived in Germany for a few years).

Anyway, not all Indian dishes have tons of chili. I'd mostly be careful with reddish dishes, although they might get sneaked in to other ones.

Amsterdam! I live quite far from Amsterdam, but I've been there a dozen of times. You should definitely visit "De Wallen", which is better known as the red light district. You might think that the "Weed and prostitutes everywhere in the Netherlands" is exaggerated, there's weed and hookers on every corner of the street there. There are even brothels next to churches.

On another note, I'm going to Curaçao this summer. Does anyone know fun stuff to do there?

If anyone's ever over to North Carolina (or to Hangzhou, China) let me know and I can suggest places. And/or tell you places to avoid.

Additionally, I can give my opinions on Hong Kong, Shenzen, Stockholm, Paris, and a handful of others.

I know I am sleepy because I read "Time Travel Thread" and thought "well I'll get some good advice here."

Well time for me to call it a night.

I have a bunch of friends in Sarajevo (some relatives too) but I haven't been in the longest time. I'll get back to you on places to visit.

What I can advise right away is that you should try the food, all of it. Burek, ćevapi and the like. Also depending on the time you're going it's either going to be stupidly cold or stupidly hot, mostly because of the geography of the area.

Tokyo: Hostel stay for an entire month can be had in Tokyo for less than it would cost to stay in a hotel for several days. They also tend to have people who speak English, helps with culture fatigue, and who've been staying in Japan for a while, which simplifies finding thing to do. $500 for a month at a hostel, $1000 for food and entertainment, $150 for subway travel, couple hundred dollars for misc, add in airfare and entire month in Japan can very reasonably be had for under $3000.

But if you only go for a week and stay in a hotel and take taxis to get around and generally rush around trying to fill every day with pre-canned tours and things, you end up spending just as much or more for a much shorter stay.

Also, find a penpal before you go. It is terribly difficult to get in socially with people in Japan without a friend to make introductions. Talking to strangers is not generally very well received in Japan. Having exchanged half a dozen emails with somebody in the month before your trip can make a huge difference on your social experience while there.

So this is the part where I say I can help you out with Ontario? Cool. I can help you out if you're going to Ontario.

So, Bulgaria Romania, sometimes this summer, hopefully a week with a car. Any particular places to see? I'm thinking of doing a trip across it and getting to the Black Sea perhaps, but other than a vague plan to visit some of the big cities and monuments nothing in particular is still planned.

E: Because I fail at country names again :V

PTW.

Anyone asking about South Africa can ask me, I guess. I've been everywhere on the East half, pretty much, and if I haven't been somewhere I know someone who has.
