Can dwarves admire from afar?
« on: February 06, 2015, 03:19:08 pm »

I uberencrusted, bone decorated and studded a masterpiece gold door to see how valuable I could make it and then a tantruming idiot destroyed it so I was wondering if I make a 1 tile pond around a statue, will dwarves still look at it and get good thoughts?

Probably. They can admire things in the same room, and I assume they aren't too myopic to see things at a distance longer than one tile. It's possible they require a path, but probably not. Waterfalls probably do not have paths usually (never tried those, however).

But exactly how far away an object can be admired from? I've considered displaying valuables behind a 3x3 square of windows, and surrounding that with a 5x5 square of fortifications. This would make sure nothing gets close, protect the display piece from stray fireballs and maybe at least one dragonfire blast, but if they can't admire something from at least 3 tiles away it would only serve to protect the item in question.

In version 0.23, dwarves could only admire buildings adjacent to them. I don't know whether that's still the case, but it probably is (though it was probably changed to allow diagonals).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I'd like to and I would've found out by myself but the new emotion system just has too many thoughts in it.

Guess I'll just wait until all my dwarves are happy again and after that unfortunate accidents will befall all tantrumers.

Maybe using burrow and a statue we can test if dorfs can admire a buiding they can't touch.
The green area is the burrow. Set up a meeting area near the statue should make dorfs stay near it, but also keep them away from the statue.
