Annoyed at a lack of dining tables?
« on: February 06, 2015, 10:05:43 am »

What does it mean, and what can be done about it?

I've tried having a lot of tables in the dining room. I've tried stringing a line of tables together in the dining room (generating one long table). I've tried having 8 chairs around the table. I've tried having several dining rooms. I've tried having overlapping as well as separated dining rooms. None of these seem to have any effect...

The only thing I can think of is to make sure the room is sized to include all your tables, and put a lot of tables.

Also, make sure the dwarfs who are getting these thoughts have access to the tables.  You know, not stuck outside or in a cavern or something.

It means that there simply aren't enough chairs with tables next to them, I think the dwarves only count the cardinal directions (no diagonals) for being "next to a table." Just build more tables and chairs (and probably a bigger dining room) if this is a problem, as long as you have one table for every three dwarves you should be good to go... They need to have chair so they can sit down while they eat, and they will sit in a chair even if there is no table next to it if no tables are available...

If you are REALLY generous you can make personal dining rooms for all your dwarves, but I find a big communal dining hall, fully smoothed and engraved with 20-25 tables keep everyone happy... Just keep in mind that if you have more than one chair per table they might get annoyed at crowded dining tables depending on their personality...

It means a dwarf sat in a chair to eat and had no adjacent table to put their food on.

You should make sure that _every_ chair you build has a table right next to it (in a cardinal direction, not on a diagonal). Yes, that includes office chairs of your manager - they _will_ sit in that chair to eat and complain when there's no table around.

Also make sure there is only one chair next to every table. If you have two chairs next to one table, two dwarfs might sit down at the same time and only one will be able to use the table. One table surrounded by chairs is a recipe for unhappiness.

Thanks!
A fair number of things I've gotten wrong, it seems. 8 chairs around the tables thus isn't a good idea...
But how does this mesh with parties? Do partying dwarves just hover around the table with no regard to seats?

Well, my fortress suffers from a distinct procreational deficiency. The only couple is an immigrant pair, and they've produced 3 children, and this is a 10 year old fortress, so I'd encourage some get-together. There's partying, especially when sieges are occurring, but not more than that. Loads of friendly relations, a few friends, and a single grudge (among the starting 7 at that, but it doesn't stop the two from partying together. with a 3:rd dorf...).

Party going dwarves never sit down, everyone just wanders around within the area designated as the room they are partying in.
This makes sense since they can also party in statue gardens, zoos, memorial halls, wells...
