The vanilla raws give male and female castes, but there is no child caste or tags. They dont have the egg layer tags, so they wouldnt need a nestbox.  Further, they have the pet_exotic tag, but not the pet tag.

This means vanilla GCS cannot be bred.

Adding the missing child tags would make them have live births. Adding the egg layer tags would make them use nestboxes.

So no-- Not without modding.

Really? I thought since .40 all animals could breed, even ones that don't have breeds or child states. Actually, I know they don't need child states, I had a giant hamster farm in my last fortress (they also don't have a child state, so they are born as adults). You can't tame them, but you can breed them...

Is there a mod to fix all of these creatures that can't breed?
If it's as simple as adding a few tags in a raw file, why isn't it done creature-wide for the entire game?
Simply, is there a reason some creatures can not be bred/tamed/nest ect?

To make it more dwarfy, or because Toady has other priorities than going through the raws to give child tags to every creature.

Any creature with both MALE and FEMALE castes should be able to reproduce, but have to be able to touch each other in latest versions.

From the dev log on 07/29/2014:
Quote
removed requirement that a creature have a baby/child state to breed completely

I suspect not being able to domesticate creatures because they don't go through the child state (born adults) is an unexpected result of the new taming system with the above quoted fix. Then maybe Toady doesn't want it possible to domesticate all creatures (not all real life animals have been successfully domesticated).

Adding [CHILD:1] to a creature will give you a year to domesticate it before it becomes an adult. You can add [CHILDNAME:puppy:puppys] to give them a unique name when still children.

Yes, yes and a resounding YES. GCS'es now no longer need child tags to breed, they'll just pop out as fully grown, sexually mature (?) spiders.  My fort now has a GCS breeding program, got the numbers up to 8 so far - would be faster too, if she wasn't crapping out males three out of four times.

Like already said, they cant be tamed fully since they lack child states, but training works fine so far with the odd exception of a bug or two, so if something starts to get hairy, just stuff them into a cage before they revert.

Ps. I use ropes. Made of giant cave spider silk. Mwuahahahaha

I am pretty damn sure they can breed. After all magma crabs breed and magma crabs have exactly the same reproduction tokens as GCS. (Aka, female and male tags, end of line)

I HAVE had giant cave spider children in my forts but then again I modded in child tags for them.

Also they don't need any nest boxes, no. The only thing you need is finding a male and a femalee of this rather elusive animal. Cage-trapping all your caverns will help, and ALSO flood you with crundles.

Or you can edit the raws to add [PET] and [COMMON_DOMESTIC] tokens to them before world gen, but then everybody and their mother (including humans) will have access to GCS and some of your immigrant dwarves might show up with one as a pet.

You might. The only creatures I've successfully edited while playing a save are dwarves, and even then only with certain tokens, or the tokens applied to new dwarves that appeared at the Fortress or were born.

But, that was back in v.34.11. I have no idea whether mid-save creature token editing takes effect in v.40.XX.
