Flooding the entire world with magma.
« on: February 04, 2015, 06:11:21 am »

I am wondering about a few things regarding magma and volcanoes.

As we all know, volcanoes refill themselves slowly. It should therefore be possible to pump a certain amount of magma out of it, wait until it refills, and then pump it back in, thus raising the magma beyond the initial level.

What I'm wondering is, will this new level then become the level that the volcano automatically refills itself up to? Or will it only refill up to the original level?

Let's assume that it's the former. My next question involves screw pumps and pressure. Say that I dig a channel in the volcano tube below the magma surface, and install a pump stack which pumps the magma back into the volcano at the surface level. Will this effectively pressurize the entire volcano? Does the pressure propagate into the magma sea as well?

I'm asking because I want to extend the volcano beyond the surface and submerge my entire fortress inside it, with a doomsday lever that drops it all the way down to the bottom. If the pressure propagates beyond the volcano and into the magma sea then I will dig a shaft from the surface and all the way down to the bottom, which should (in theory) be filled with magma welling up from below, flooding all the caverns and eventually, the world.

Is this possible?

It'll probably kill your FPS before the world is flooded...

But do it. It's incredibly dwarven !

You won't be able to permanently flood anywhere outside your fortress, although it will give visiting adventurers a big (and brief) shock.

I also suspect that volcanoes stick to their original level, not your new level as you hope, but do let us know how it goes.

And please tell us about the pressurizing.I want to drain my volcano to build some structures inside and then fill it again. However, from previous attempts I know that simply draining somewhere at the bottom is extremely slow. If the magma would be pressurized, this should become faster.

There is only one possible reply to your entire post: Yes. I don't know how any of the technical stuff will work out, but YES.

Possibly just pumping lava from point A to point B on the same level at the top of the volcano would pressurize the whole thing making it drain faster.

Someone did this way back when; he built a pump stack down the inside of a volcano. I have a few posts on the science of draining a volcano and building a fort on the interior.

No, it only refills up to the original level. The game remembers the original level for each magma pipe.
