Mirella noticed the tendril slowly descending.  She watched just long enough to confirm it was moving with purpose towards Johanna, then raised her holy symbol.  "Johanna, down!"

(Tendril's Dex Save: 18, Success!)
The tendril whips out of the way, and whips forward, lashing out at Mirella.
(Tendril Grab vs. Mirella: 26, Success!)
The tendril whips around the cleric, wrapping around her tightly, squeezing her in her armor.
(Tendril Grab vs. Mirella's pack: 20, Success!)
Three more tendrils from the southeast rip her pack off, pulling it into the darkness.

Johanna rolled away on instinct, only to see it grab Mirella. Whatever it was!

"...Where are ya, anyway..." She said, raising her hammer, and scanning the ceiling.

Action: Can I determine the source of these tentacles? A firebolt would fix that fella! If it's too dark, fire at the probable spot-it should illuminate the enemy...

Mirella felt the straps rip away as her backpack vanished into the gloom, taking almost everything she had save for that which she wore.  Thankfully, that included her holy symbol, still safely around her neck.

Arwen snaps himself out of his own head, throwing his Firebolt at the Tendril! "So that thing's here now. The hell."

Throw a Firebolt, roll relevant knowledge checks please!

Spoiler: Initiative: (click to show/hide)
(Arwen's Spell Attack: 7+7, Failure!)
The ice harmlessly dissipates over the rocky skin of the tendril.

The Tendril suddenly tightens, whipping Mirella off the ledge, into the darkness. She's heavy in her armor, and she hits the ground hard. (Mirella's falling damage: 1) Alright, it only bruised her.

(Johanna's Spell Attack, with Disadvantage: 16 13+6, Failure!)
Wildly calculating the trajectory of the tendrils, Johanna aims at what she thinks is their source. Her fire zips through the air, slamming into a stalactite. It splashes against the rock, revealing sharp, flashing teeth, and a single, hungry eye.

(Arwen's Spell Attack: 13+4, Failure!)
The tentacle twists out of the way, flailing around the chamber.
(Arwen's Nature with Disadvantage: 20 4+2.)
Arwen has no idea. Some sort of subterranean predator?

(Mirella's Spell Attack, with Disadvantage: 19 11+6, Failure!)
The tentacle around Mirella makes it hard to aim, and it's not helped by the fact that she can't actually see what she's aiming at. The bolt goes wide, but luckily, it hits a neighboring stalactite, revealing the creature.

Johanna hadn't learned of anything like this in college-she had to think back to her Da's 'crazy' stories about when he was a young Dwarf, in the Mines-tales of evil Shadow elves, and Mushroommen...half of it she hadn't believed, the other half she was sure had been overblown.

She tried to recall anything of those rare, happy times with her family...something about living stalactites...with teeth and a hungry eye...

Action: Knowledge check on that thing!

Also, use the illumination magnificent power of Darkvision to whop that thing with some magic missiles.

As Mirella was slammed down heavily against the ground, a combination of her shield and the mail cushioned the majority of the blow, and Mirella gave silent thanks to the blacksmith who had created both back in Nesmé.  She released the amulet and looked around - a column next to her, which she unfortunately couldn't see through, an egg, and what looked like a bound-up elf shrouded in the darkness.  She brought her staff down heavily on the tendril that had just tossed her, and looked at the elf.  "Hold on a moment, and we'll have you free."

(Stalactite Dex Save: 2, Failure!)
(Adrik's Spell Damage: 1+2+2)
Adrik's spell coats the creature with a thin layer of frost, which it mostly ignores.
(Adrik's Intelligence Check: 18+1)
It's a Roper, a denizen of deep caverns. Adrik's mother warned him about such beasts. They are perilous to miners who don't have some raw meat to offer it in trade for safe passage.

(Tendril Grab vs. Johanna: 9, Failure!)
The newly identified Roper lashes out at Johanna, trying to entangle her in its tendrils, but the touch of the sudden imposition of her mage armor causes it to retreat in caution.
Meanwhile, Mirella is reeled in closer and closer to the beast's gnashing maw. One quick blow from those teeth... and she might be seeing Selune sooner than she thought. That said, it seems to already be enjoying a meal... her meal! Hey! It was eating her rations!

(Johanna's Intelligence Check: 4+4)
This creature is something from the stories that old, grizzled miners tell to beardless dwarvlings; something of blood, earth and teeth. Something that, to tangle with, is to bargain your life.
(Johanna's Magic Missile Damage: 2+1, 3+1, 3+1, 11 damage!)
The bolts of force slam into the creature's stony exterior, but it seems mostly unphased.

(Arwen's Spell Attack: 13+4, Failure!)
Arwen's fire harmlessly splashes on a neighboring, non-carnivorous stalactite.
(Arwen's Intelligence Check with Disadvantage: 6 5+2)
Adventurers would occasionally pass through Arwen's home town, relating their stories. He remembers a weary and exhausted bard, the only remnant of a lost party, that told of encountering a creature not unlike this in a citadel where the sun does not shine.
(Arwen's Intelligence Check with Disadvantage: 5, 1+2)
They are clearly the eggs of a giant breed of chicken called Babas. Babas' eggs are delicious when pan fried. The trick, however, is finding a pan large enough.

(Mirella's Nature Check: 5+2)
Whatever this creature is, it is a beast from the dark, of the dark. It is best left unmeddled with, but that's clearly not an option any more. However, even beasts can be made tame by calm hand and strong will.
(Mirella's Arcana Check: 11+2)
Those are the eggs of a Black Dragon.
(Mirella's Attack: 19+5, Success! 2+3 damage!)
In the case of Hardwood V. Rock, Rock eventually came out the victor, but Hardwood made a convincing case, managing to win some sanctions against Rock.

The illuminating light of Mirella's failed spell fades, and the area is cast into blackness once more, hiding the roper from even the dwarven wizard's sight. Mirella, on the other hand, is completely blinded by the darkness.
Johanna makes out two drakes slinking out of the shadows, looking up hungrily at the cleric's struggling form.

"It's a Roper!  They like raw meat!  Please tell me someone has some!"
If I have any raw meat, throw it in the Roper's probably-direction!

"It's a Roper!  They like raw meat!  Please tell me someone has some!"

"There's a whole room of raw meat right behind us, but we didn't exactly bring it in our backpacks..."

She wondered how exactly a bargain was struck. Did they shake hands...tentacles? Exchange greetings? Did you just toss the food and run? The thing was obviously smart enough to go for a backpack, or shy away from a mage armor spell-she suspected it lived here as a sort of trash disposal, cadging free meals from the Cultists who in turn let it hang around. They would have certainly driven it away otherwise...maybe, it was a beast that was smarter than it looked.

Johanna turned to the Roper thing and shouted. She took out her whole mess kit, loaded with rations-and held it up in the air. It should smell good, assuming this creature actually could smell-it was still warm from lunch and the leftover food she has cooked.

"Hey, you lout! I've got nice tasty Rothe Beef and cheese here-let's make a deal! I'll give you my lunch, in exchange for your lunch-it's much better tasting, no armor to crunch through, and a lot less scrawny. We can pay for passage! You wanna be fed, right? We can do that-that's how this works, right?" She said, pointing to Mirella with her hammer. She was also preparing to loose a firebolt if this didn't work...though, it was pretty clear they had no way of injuring the thing. Which made her wonder if this was going to work at all, since it probably knew that.

Action: Diplomacy!

If it fails, firebolt the tendril holding Mirella-offering the idea that a fall and a scuffle with two drakes is probably better than being chewed on by a Cr5(!) monster stalactite with 100 HP.

Arwen remembered that bard well. He'd been in the tavern at the time, when the poor elf had wandered into town, wounded and missing most of his armor. The Citadel where the sun doesn't shine... Arwen had no wish to go there, especially not after the tale the man had told. He'd even started screaming at the chandelier in the Tavern, swearing it was a monster... Arwen briefly wondered if that man had made it home alright, but the battle going on quickly drew his attention back.

He decided to ignore those delicious eggs for now, and instead fired another firebolt at the thing, hoping this one would hit.

Continue the onslaught!
