D&D 5e: The Tyranny of Dragons. IC Thread: A Much Delayed End.
« on: February 03, 2015, 03:24:00 pm »

OOC Thread.

After desert, Johanna offered her new acquaintances a bed for the night, which they gladly accepted. In the morning, a messenger had arrived from the Lord's Alliance, asking for Johanna. She gave the wizard a letter and a small pouch before leaving to deliver the rest of her burden.
Spoiler: The letter and pouch (click to show/hide)
Johanna gives the party an official offer of employment, which they except. You leave that day.

For the past several days, you have been traveling a road that winds lazily across the rolling grasslands of the Greenfields. Sundown is approaching when you top a rise and see the town of Greenest just a few short miles away. But instead of the pleasant, welcoming town you expected, you see columns of black smoke rising from burning building, running figures that are little more than dots at this distance, and a dark, winged shape wheeling low over the keep that rises above the center of the town. Greenest is being attacked by a dragon!

"How am I not surprised." Johanna said drolly. She had been having a pleasant enough day, up till this point.

"...we have to help. Follow me! We'll have to move quickly-we shan't be in a good spot if the Dragon catches us in the open like this..."

Action: Run to the rescue!

Also, once I'm in range, try to determine what sort of dragon it is and anything else useful about it.

Arcana, History check +5?

Arwen draws his blade and begins dashing forward at the sight of the dragon. "COME ON! WE'VE GOTTA HELP DRIVE IT AWAY!" Realizing it's a few miles, he increases his pace.

(If we have horses, he spurs the horse on faster instead.)

"Doing what's expected of it, no doubt." Johanna answers a bit dryly.

You race along the road towards the town, and after over half an hour, reach the town. It becomes clear that the dragon swooping around the keep is a brilliant blue. (Arcana: 5+5) Blue dragons are part of the Chromatic family of dragons, and are naturally inclined to evil.
You are currently in the western outskirts of the town, on the main road that passes through the town. There is a small stream to the south that runs its winding course in a generally parallel direction to the road. To the southeast is the keep, which is probably the center of the defence.
Without warning, five humans dash out from between two buildings on your left. A limping man and three young children race across the street into more shadows, and a woman carrying a round shield and a broken spear turns and faces back in the direction from which they came. Eight kobolds stream out of the alley on the family's hells and fan out around the woman, who looks determined to delay the creatures for as long as possible.
The kobolds seem to be ignoring you, focusing their attention on the woman, individually probing her defences, lunging forward and then dancing away from her swings with the spear.

Arwen, seeing that the best option here is to protect the people close at hand, races up behind the kobolds and swings his blade!

Arwen attacks the nearest Kobold!

Mirella watched as she saw the man and children hide into the shadows, then focused her attention on the kobolds.  As Arwen charged in, she followed, moving to keep the kobolds not only busy, but away from the people who fled.

Mirella attacks the kobold closest to shadows where the family hid

"Let them get a whiff of this..." Johanna said calmly, murmuring an incantation and spinning her warhammer round and round-a cloud of  glowed sickly green cloud began to gather around it...

She guessed the creatures were quite nimble, but you couldn't dodge gas...

Action: Cast Poison Spray!

Target one of the Kobolds threatening the family, the same target as Mirella if possible.

Follow Mirella to stay in range.

Con Saving throwing 13 on target, or...
Damage: 1d12 Poison

The rogue had lagged behind. While the others dashed forward, slinging spells and steel, she took a more subtle path.

Sliding more to the side than forward, she lurked in the shadow of the buildings to keep herself concealed. She kissed the dragon fang on her collar for luck before letting an arrow fly.

Mirella, before anyone else acts, pushes her way through the kobold pack, shield in hand, to stand with the woman, and swings at the next kobold to attack, (Attack roll: 11+5, Success) connecting solidly with its head, (Damage roll: 6+3) putting it on the ground.
Arwen goes barreling towards a kobold in the rear of the pack, (Attack roll: 18+7, Success) with a powerful downwards diagonal slice, (Damage roll: 5+7) sending the kobold in question flying like a doll.
Johanna's magic settles on a kobold as it jumps back from Mirella's sudden appearance and attack, (Con save: ... Failure. Damage roll: 4) and takes a deep breath of poison gas, and begins to gag. It's still barely in the fight.
Sweetpea take a moment to aim, firing upon a kobold advancing on the woman. (Attack roll: 13+6, Success) Her arrow strikes the reptilian creature in the shoulder, (Damage roll: 2+2[Sneak Attack]+4) which crumples to the ground.
Five kobolds remain, one of whom is heavily injured.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The kobolds split into three parts: two continue their assault on the woman and now Mirella, two attack Arwen, and the injured one drops its weapons, turns tail, and runs.
One stabs the woman in the leg with a short dagger, while it's partner's blade fails to connect with Mirella's armor.
A pebble from a kobold's sling pings off of Arwen's mail, while another's dagger finds a small chink in his armor, cutting deep! 6 damage for Arwen!
It is Sweetpea's turn.

That's one.
The rogue repeated the process. Dragon's luck. Find an arrow. Draw the string, breath in, release the arrow at the same time as she exhaled.

She trusted the lunkhead to look after himself. The threat, then, was to the woman.

Shoot one of the Kobolds attacking the woman.

Sweetpea releases her arrow as the kobold in question is leaping towards the woman, (Attack roll: 8+6, Success) catching it in the leg, (Damage: 3+4+4) sending it to the ground with a yelp.
Edit: (The DM forgot about initiative and stuff.)
The woman takes a swing at the last Kobold and misses.
It is Johanna's turn.

Mirella brought her staff around as the knife slid off her mailled armor, striking at the last kobold fighting the woman and her.
