Besiege- Medieval physics, explosions, and mayhem

I didn't see a topic for this, so here goes!



First things first, the game is Early Access. It is about $7 on steam, which gets you the game itself as well as future updates. The current amount of content is one island/continent out of about 4. To be added are the other continents/islands, true sandbox mode, and even a moon level/campaign! If Early Access is a deal breaker, then it is still worth it to keep an eye on this game.

That being said, what content the game already has is fun. You start out by invading the first continent and terrorizing a small house. You have to build your machine out of wooden blocks, mechanized parts like hinges and springs, and weapons.



Missions vary per map, with most being to kill or destroy everything in sight (like that poor little house in the first map) by using any of the varied weapons, ranging from a simple metal spike to cannons, flamethrowers, and even rotating sawblades. There are other mission types as well, such as picking up items scattered across the map or surviving until you reach a certain point.

The entire game is physics-based, so what you build can and will fall apart if you don't build it well. It is funny to see how some creations function, though! You keep the same machine from map to map, but are otherwise free to build it and modify it in any way you want to. Flying machines are a thing, but they can be tricky to make functional. There is fire as well, which can spreads from one object to another and damages everything it touches until they burn down completely.



The control are simple and to-the-point. Each piece that can be controlled can be mapped to whatever key you want. This can lead to some interesting moments when you find out that your wheels all turn in different directions...

Graphics are nice, and they give the impression of being a larger-than-life being playing with a bunch of toys. There's a good bit of control over the graphics, too, with options for turning off the anti-aliasing, bloom, motion blur, etc. Even with everything set to ON it plays smoothly until you put a massive amount of parts on your machine



Overall, the game is impressive and really fun despite its Early Access status and small size. It definitely brings out the orkiness and dwarfiness in you, and is definitely worth watching out for.

Somebody on my steam friends recommended this the other day too.  I think I put it on my wishlist, even though I'm still not sure what exactly it is.   :P

Just spotted this on Steam. As per my usual approach, I check the negative reviews first. From what I've seen main "problems" seem to be (current) lack of content, no sandbox and the ability to just spam "what works"?

However... it looks really fun! The negative points don't concern me at all so I guess I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

I heard there are mac and linux versions that just aren't available at Steam yet. Will wait for them to be available and for the game to gain a bit more content before throwing cash at it, but man, does it look tempting as hell.

I tried to figure out how to send bombs flying over long ranges, but couldn't figure out how.

My first attempt consisted of making a long line of pistons in a single direction, that simply pushed the bomb forward, like some failed archaic attempt at a railgun.

The bomb exploded in the chamber, destroying the vehicle.

I didn't figure out how to get a simple catapult to work (with hinges and constricting ropes) until many missions later.

10/10, even in its early state, I've had more fun with this than some finished games.

Yeah, me and the Bro have been playing this, 'tis hilarious.

I think my favourite so far has been my tank (with proper tank track controls) that had a number of spinning discs on vertical pistons in a channel in the centre. Drive round, funnel all the mobs into the channel, then drop the discs on their head. Satisfyingly bloody.

Making a decent trebuchet or catapult, especially one that will do long distances, or multiple projectiles, requires actual engineering, and thus is slightly tricky.

I do think that braces are too heavy though, given that to stop your machine flying apart in various interesting ways, you need dozens of the blasted things.

This game seems to have much potential for science, of the dwarven brand. Colour me interested, eh.

Actually I'm having some trouble uploading this stuff, as the gifs are pretty large, and I'm short on time. I'll upload the multi-cannon one later, but here, have this one instead - I recorded it with lower quality, so it was the smallest one to squeeze in:

I just read Vicont's comment about two-shot catapults with decent range being hard to do, and felt like taking the challenge. :P

I've also seen reloadable single catapults with baskets that roll bombs down.  I'm still working on missiles.  I made one that was a platform with a decoupler and a stupid-ass missile with a cup on the tip (facing up so the bomb won't fall out) and two cannons for propulsion. 

It worked.  Sort of.  The rocket kid of flopped through the air but it dislodged the bomb with enough force to blow up the castle.
