Era of Diesel: War of Europeia, Discussion Thread!
« on: February 02, 2015, 12:52:48 pm »

IC Thread is here!

Vienna; the heart of Holy Roman Empire. The dynastic hegemony of annointed and elected Emperors had its zeniths and nadirs, but has lasted in its entirety since it has been revived in 962 by Otto I. For almost a millenia now, HRE has governed the Central Europe; at various times of history, the double-headed black eagle on gold could be seen over at St.Peter's Cathedral, Castle of Oslo, and even at the shores of Bay of Biscay.

Nowadays, however, old rivals are growing bolder; young nations emerge from civil conflicts; rebellious regions splinter away from HRE. But the Empire refuses to abandon its conservative, catholic dogma and the Holy Roman Emperor, Leopold IV, dwells on the past instead of moving into the modern times. How long it will be before HRE gets dismantled by those daring to fight against it? Or maybe, despite everything, it will continue for 20 more years?

Welcome Era of Diesel: War of Europeia! Inspired by Sheb's map, I have modified the map of Europa, added nautical techs and did a little of re-work. I hope you will enjoy the game!

Welp...France forced me to move the Capital into Italy :/

Name: Konföderation Süddeutscher Staaten - Southern German Confederacy
Leader's Name: Friedrich von Hohenzollern (Ghazkull)
Government Type: Dictatorship +2
Traits (Points left): Tiny (-1 Point), Modernized (2), Adequate (0), Militaristic (2)
Capital Province #: #61 due to being pushed around through half of Europe...
National Color: Grey alternatively dark green
History: The Kingdoms of Württemberg, Bayern and Hessia have long played only minor roles in the HRE. Being not as militaristic as Prussia, as influential as Austria or as rich as the Hanse, they were never considered important countries. That is until now. Upset with the merging of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, Hessia and other southern German Provinces, the marginalization of the Southerners as "bumpkins" by the Prussians and the Heavy Trade Tariffs enforced by the Hanse have led the three kingdoms to unite. In the last century they have managed to drive deep into the still bickering Italian City States to retake Tyrol, retook the French Alsace and brought it back into the German Fold and even managed to convince the Swiss to join their growing Confederation of Southern Germans.

The nominal leadership of this Confederacy has been given to the Hohenzollerns which after a coup d'etat had to flee prussia, proved to be the perfect Arbitrators between the difficult tempers of Swabians, Bavarians, Hessians and Swiss (and maybe even the Badensians though nobody likes them much). At the moment the Capital has been moved South for reasons unknown.

IIIIIN!

EDIT: can i play the Nation of Bavaria-Swabia-Hessia or would that take too much of your core lands away?

There's a (unspoken) rule that capitals cannot be adjacent to each other :v As for core lands, HRE will get whatever you guys don't take.

Name: Republic of France
Leader's Name: Cecile Valles, Citizen-Secretary on the Committee of Public Safety (Culise)
Government Type: Dictatorship
Traits (0): Dictatorship (2); Medium (0); Developed (1); Small (-1); Militarist (2); Military Traditions (1)
Capital Province: 56
National Color: Horizon Blue
History: The fortunes of France only continued to wane as the star of the Holy Roman Empire rose ascendant after the Revolutionary Wars, the restored Valois dynasty remaining unstable and prone to civil unrest.  This only grew worse in the late 19th century as economic dislocation worsened, and an increasingly-ineffectual monarchy proved unable to meet the demands of the people.  When the Communes rose up and expelled King Charles XI, the old Committee for Public Safety was restored under its original name to satiate the blood-wishes of the Paris mob.  Among the secretaries appointed by the National Assembly to this committee was Cecile-Aimee Valles de Challans, the youngest and most junior as well as a suffragette, and while the Committee gave over the most egregious of the noble oppressors to the Mob, she was already laying her plans carefully.  She set about making alliances in the military, arguing the case of moderation, and drew in the rural laborers and agricultural communes, which had less loyalty to Paris and were more amenable to reason.  She pressed hard for the establishment of a provincially-appointed State Council to serve as the upper house of a bicameral legislature during the Congressional Conventions, reducing the power of the National Assembly and the population-bias of the great cities, especially Paris, in government.  Finally, and most dangerously of all, she redirected the attentions of the mob itself, using catspaws to focus their hatred on the moderates of the National Assembly such as herself and fan it into an outburst of violence instead of the power of the ballot.  When they finally, inevitably overreached, she brought in the military, already in position, and crushed them decisively.  Stability brought order, and an expansion of trade brought some small modicum of prosperity, for which the Commitee took credit.  Though the military was greatly reduced as a consequence of the loss of many Legitimists, it is beginning to reform around a new nucleus under the aegis of Valles' ally Antoine Renault.  With the ominous silence of Vienna a looming spectre over French politics, it is feared by some and hoped by others that it will soon see use in the service of the Revolution.

In the eyes of the fanatic, she betrayed the Revolution.  In the eyes of the Legitimist, her very position was an act of treason against the true King, cowering as he was in Vienna.  In the eyes of the common man and woman, she brought peace and stability, ended the bloodshed, and put bread on their tables again.  To the military, she provides a civilian face, but one understanding of military realities.  Eschewing pompous titles or official status, to the world at large, she remains Citizen-Secretary Valles, but unofficially, she remains the first among equals.

Hello all,
This seems like an cool Risk-esque game, and I'd be interested in playing.
Just a couple questions:
-The setting is a 1900s alternate history where the HRE was not disbanded?
-Do we have to choose historical nations?

Leader's Name:    Statthalter Albrecht von Hambourg
Government Type: Republic
Traits:                 Tiny (+1), Modernized (-2), Adequate Army (+0), Enlightened (-1), Industrial Power (-2), Naval Capabilities (-1)
Capital Province:   #07 Stockholm
National Colour:    Steel Grey

Name: British Empire {Branching off from history}
Leader's Name: Amelia Alice Tenrin (Tiruin)
Government Type: Democracy
Traits (0 Points left): Democracy (3), Tiny (-1), Medieval (-1), Inadequate (-2), Militaristic (2), Military Traditions (1), Industrial Power (2), Naval Capabilities (1)
Capital Province #: 2
National Color: Empire Pink
History: Under the Victorian Era, many improvements--both vast and towards society--were had; under this different timeline however, an expanse of innovation and modernization nudged the old lands of the Scots and the British, urging the populace to look towards greater horizons than that which they were comfortable with.

A change in the governmental structure, though with respect to the old style, brought about an atmosphere of openness and realization of potential and ideology. Though the Industrial Revolution left its marks on the populace and the countryside, a movement of preservation and modernization was at hand--culminating in the creation of a representative state, built for furthering national and international progress.
