How big can dwarf be?
« on: February 02, 2015, 09:19:58 am »

I was wondering how big can dwarf grow. One of my militia dwarves is currently about (according to Dwarf Therapist) 123k cm3 in size. Will she get bigger? How big are your dwarves?

Twice the volume of the average dwarf ? Either she's a ball of lard, either she is huge.

And when I mean huge i mean she's a giant by human standards.

Ah, no.  That's not right.

Assuming a spherical dwarf (haha) a volume of 62 gives a radius of 2.46 while a volume of 123 gives a radius of 3.09.

http://www.calculatorsoup.com/calculators/geometry-solids/sphere.php

(most) Dwarfs are not spherical, but the relationship between volume and breadth/height is not what you describe.  A very small increase in dimension (in this case about a 25% increase in dimension) yields a doubling in volume.

A dwarf 2x as voluminous may be about 1/4 larger in every dimension than the regular dwarf.

According to wiki
Quote
Child:    3,000 cm3
Adolescent:   15,000 cm3
Adult: 60,000 cm3
So that's already twice the size of your regular average-fat dwarf, and pretty close to black bear.
Consider breeding the offsprings and making a fortress of giant dwarves.

Black bears are pretty small in stature, but they are very thick.  The extra volume is coming from a little bit more girth and stoutness, they are not giant.

I think the relationship between dimension and volume is pretty elementary, this shouldn't be a point of contention.

Well yeah.  No one ever said "this dwarf is twice the linear dimensions as average", they said "twice as large", and given this dwarf has twice the volume and mass of average, that is perfectly correct.

Hmm, yes, I exxagerated a bit.

So she should be about as tall as a human, however she should be a pretty damn massive human, so not a giant but a bodybuilder.

But still, my point stands, especially that we do not know if she is especially tall or broad.

My biggest dwarf is 135,110 cm3 (used to be 137k at a point), the second biggest 110k cm3. They are also strongest (a little short of 4000) and 2nd strongest (3800), strapped with muscle and lard.

Seems to be a regular size, potentially. My most senior military members are all in the 110k-120k range right now. The largest is my legendary speardwarf who is 121k, and is around 4100 strength.

edit: he was 4170, not 4710. Yay, dyslexia!

No, guys, this isnt right.  Look, I'm not a science teacher so I'm not doing a great job here, but this is the deal:

If you double this dwarfs volume, it is 1/4 larger in each direction.  If it is 4 feet tall, it becomes 5 feet tall.  If it is 1 foot wide, it becomes 1.25 feet wide.

I think 4 feet is already pretty tall for a dwarf, so this is doubling the volume of an already large individual.

You were absolutely correct that we dont know which direction exactly the dwarf is growing in; length, width, height.  The game abstracts that, though it does give you basic descriptive information about how broad, tall, and fat the dwarf is..  This descriptive information I think is used as factors in figuring the volume, but the system is abstracted and not exact.

Why so?  Dwarfs are 6/7 the volume of humans, so nominally an average dwarf should be 39/41 as long as a human in each linear dimension, right?

Dwarves are also the same size as elves.

You don't grow taller from eating a lot and working out, just sayin'

Yeah, if all measurements considered, people can't always wear clothes made for another, unless they are some fat robes or sort.

Maybe around 5 feet.
4 is definitely too short to my own taste, but 5 is not uncommon for humans in some places.
