Mordecai watched Lilie go, then gathered the remaining books to bring inside. Some commotion near the grand hall told him that Lord Heston was receiving visitors - new retainers, perhaps? He decided to go that way and observe the newcomers.

"Ah, I suppose I can understand that. So you plan to ask Lord Heston if you can join our group?"

Just then Mordecai walked into the throne room, and Vara waved him over.

"Now, if you want exact details about history things, I suspect this is the man you want to talk to. Mordecai, I was just talking to this man about the fact that my hair being purple no longer means I am part of the royal family. You can probably tell him more about that shift than I can. I just have always liked the color purple, so I decided to dye it this color. Can't say I put much thought into it.

No way I can tell them that it was the first color that popped into my mind while fleeing Letia. But this is good. I can learn more and have a better answer next time someone questions me."

Lilie, who was still wandering around the keep searching for a good place to train, surprisingly ran into Vara talking to a strange old man. Mordecai was there as well, though he was still on the other side of the room. She thought she heard something about hair color, and walked over to see what was going on. Finding a training spot could wait, and this seemed fairly interesting.

:"I've considered asking if I can tag along, yes.  Most of the lords I knew think themselves too old to go gallivanting off in a war for younger folk, but..."

His words drifted off as Vara waved the new arrival over, the name striking him as oddly familiar.  The face, once he got a look at it, struck him as even moreso.

:"Hmmm."

Mordecai was a bit blindsided but answered Vara's question anyway.

: "Hmm? Oh, well, the law forbidding commoners from having purple or pink hair was repealed 31 years ago, following the trial of a noblewoman named Elizabeth Amy. She had been born with pink hair, which was forbidden to one of her status, but she was allergic to hair dye and magic had no effect. At her trial, she argued that the law was discriminatory against those who had no choice but to commit a crime. The king nearly ordered her head shaved, but instead decided to change the law." The vampire then turned to face the newcomer.

: "You are one of the new vassals?"

:"Some argument on that, as I recall.  No one's quite sure whether my old personal estate falls in this young lord's lands or in his neighbor's."

:"The land has yet to be officially returned to me, in any case.  Nor has the personal library I kept there.  I hoped a meeting with the royal librarian might resolve that issue."

The man regarded Mordecai with a keen eye, a trace of a smile rising to his face.

:"You've aged worse than I have."

Lilie watched the old men speak. What they were talking about was a little bit interesting. The grey-haired one didn't seem to know about Mordecai's true nature... And she didn't intend to reveal it, either.

"Right, right. Elizabeth Amy. I wasn't alive then, so you know, makes sense I'd have forgotten the exact details. Thanks for helping me out."

:"Hm.  I'm not surprised.  It has been some time..."

:"Do you recall Wings Upon Dawn?  Or the Twelve Songs of Corscan Warlords?  Maybe my Observations on Letian Warfare?  Perhaps even An T-ardú de Jaelun?"

:"I should hope my work has not fallen out of favor so quickly.  I am Ser Teagan Leigh."

: "Sir Teagan Leigh? The Sir Teagan Leigh?"

: "Yes, I know your work well! Your Observations are a perennial favorite among up-and-coming military commanders, and I must admit to rereading Wings Upon Dawn whenever the mood strikes me. I had no idea that one such as yourself would be joining with Lord Heston."

:"At least for a time, my friend.  At least for a time. I hope to publish a volume or two on the Coalition war, and I'm given to understand Lord Heston will be moving to the front soon."

:"Still, I'm pleased that you recognized me.  A man may write for himself, but works need other eyes to give them value."

Tirena had more focused on launching arrows than the half-vampire, truth be told. The Princess was a... tender spot to be poked by a relative stranger. She collected the arrows slowly, running her hand over the rough straw of the targets. Bulls-eye. Bulls-eye. Hmmph, that was was in the outer ring. It was a lot easier to hit now than it was in combat.

Still, perhaps she could find someone to take her mind off it. The half vampire had been friendly enough, though the whole half dead bit was...

She stretched her arms. It was kind of boring without the princess around. Even when they argued, it was something to do. The man who invented a book the blind could read would be a very rich man indeed. Perhaps some kind of magic? She'd have to ask Mordecai.

The blind archer headed inside. She could hear people talking... something about books. Huh.
"Hey, Mordy. Got a question for you." she interjected when there was a lull in conversation.

As pleased as Mordecai was to meet the one and only Sir Teagan, he wasn't sure what the man himself could offer to Lord Heston. He didn't seem like the warrior type, and his advanced age could become an issue as it inevitably did for all humans. Still, it wasn't up to him to decide who to bring on as a retainer. He turned when Tirena spoke to him.

: "Yes, what is it Tirena?"

"I was thinking about books, actually. Is there magic that can make sounds?"
