No guys, you don't understand. I can't shoot arrows from a horse myself so clearly no one else should be able to.

The horse archery thing due to a lack of stirrups or a saddle or something? I seem to remember firing from a moving horse wasn't too common at the time because it was difficult to maintain balance at the same time as aiming.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mounted_archery

"A horse archer, horsed archer, or mounted archer is a cavalryman armed with a bow, able to shoot while riding from horseback."

"In the tactic of the Parthian shot the rider would retreat from the enemy while turning his upper body and shooting backwards."

Mounted archery was a mobile thing so...I would say that the developers made an odd and unnecessary choice...I suppose its a balance thing

It's a good point. Maybe the huns didn't have proper saddles?

So what is different from Rome II other than hordes and umm horse archers not shooting while moving? A totally new game for horde mechanics alone seems a bit silly.

Is it? I was under the impression this was one of those (standalone) expansions CA loves to do, see Barbarian Invasion, Alexander, Kingdoms, Rise/Fall of the Samurai.

Both RTW expansions as well as Kingdoms required the base game to work, and I don't think that fits into the definition of "standalone". Attila would be something closer to NTW as I understand it.

It seems like an expansion to me, but the price tag disagrees...

What the hell it is about this "horse archers can't fire while moving" nonsense ? Because horse archers were very powerful specifically BECAUSE they could do this.

I'm more eager for Warhammer : Total War as well. I'm sure Bretonnia/Warriors of Chaos will be hilarious and awesome.

Firing from a horse, moving or not, has a few small things to consider. Things like;

Where is the quiver located? (I believe it was common for mounted archers to have the quiver around waist height rather than on their backs.

What bow are they using? (Long bows can't be used as they're too big to swap from one side of the horse to the other.)

Also, as I mentioned before; stirrups you can stand in while firing to be more accurate and a saddle so you can attach the stirrups as well as a bridle to control the horse.

I believe mounted archers have been used for longer before 0 A.D. I don't think they were that heavily used by Rome or Greece because of preference for infantry and phalanxes respectively.

What faction do the Zamindari horsemen come from? I search and I find something to do with India.

Yes, we were talking about the Mughal Empire in Empire: Total War.

As for the mounted archers in Rome 2, shooting while moving was a special ability that most of the eastern/steppe horse archers had, but more western horse archers lacked (iirc). So the western ones only retained the advantage of mobility, and thus weren't half as good as soon as something started chasing them.

In Attila I've been too busy burning the north as the Geats (THE REAL GOTHS) to have run into any horse archers so far, but I assume it is the same set up there.
