I'm torn, is it different enough from Rome II to justify the purchase? I may just wait for it's first big sale.

Things I have noticed thus far:

Hordes work somewhat differently from BI. They are both armies and mobile cities (camps, really), with their own buildings. Camps don't seem to have public order, so no rebellions. There are also some mechanics related to how settled people interact with hordes (Western Romans, for example, can recruit from non-hostile hordes passing through their lands).

When conquering a city you have a few new options: you can raze it to the ground, leaving it an uninhabited ruin, you can occupy, sack, sack and occupy, or liberate. Liberating creates a new faction from that city that starts out allied to you.

Religion is a factor here, as it was in BI, but not Rome 2. It affects relations between factions as well as public order in cities.

Family trees are back, and you can even do political marriages with other factions. You can also assign governors to regions in order to either better exploit or stabilize.

The environment in sieges can be destroyed. Tents are knocked over, fields start burning and buildings can be permanently destroyed.

The factions themselves... there are fewer. Eastern and Western Romes, Sassanids, Franks, Saxons, Visigoths and Ostrogoths, Vandals, Alans, Huns. Plus the three nordic factions from the day one DLC. West Rome is supposed to be extremely hard to play as (game rates its difficulty as "legendary", but I've yet to try it.

It's certainly a step up from Rome 2, but I don't know yet how big of a step that is.

Horse archers have pretty much always been OP. It was true in the original Rome, Medieval 2, and now Rome 2. I guess it's just the way they work (hell, they were pretty OP in real life).

They're so OP that they're likely the reason why the Mughal Empire was not made playable in Empire, despite being a major civilization. If you use an all factions playable mod, Zamindari Horsemen completely and utterly wreck everything in that game. Their only weakness is running out of ammo.

??? Maybe if your enemies weren't paying any attention. Demi-cannons would wreck their face in easily.

The wiki says Zamindari Horsemen can't shoot while moving.

That sounds retarded.

Can't wait for mwcenter mods :)...

I wish I still had my full collection, ugh.

I enjoyed Empire but I steamrolled all over the world, too eazy at later stages.

Prefer 3 man hotseat Medieval 2
though Shogun & Rome (1&2) were enjoyable too.

So playing as the Western Romans is sorta like being in that scene in Animal House where a guy beats the shit outta you and all you can say is "thank you sir may I have another?"

Except instead of joining a fraternity you get your throat slit in the end.

The other factions are fun to play as but the Western empire is just so incredibly, utterly doomed. I've debated burning everything north of the Alps in desperation.

Is it like BI West Rome?  Cuz that wasn't too bad if you were willing to take drastic measures.

From what I've observed, you get Vandal doomstacks rampaging across northen italy in the very first turns. If you deal with them you still need to deal with the Ostrogoths, Saxons, Franks and others. Most factions will home in on you right off the gate.

If I can win with Ottoman empire, anything is possible.

It does seem kinda stupid they are exempt from shooting while moving, when almost every other total war game before Empire had horse archers moving while shooting.
