Total War Attila - And...it is released!
« on: February 01, 2015, 03:32:51 am »

You can see some of the features/factions and what not on the wiki:
http://wiki.totalwar.com/w/Total_War_ATTILA

And here is the Steam store page for it:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/325610/

I know Rome 2 launch was rough, but current version is epic I love it a lot. I still had a ton of fun at launch, and avoided any forum about Rome 2 as I enjoyed my game. :P Pretty much what I do when an MMO launches lol...avoid any forum or thread about the game :P

But I enjoyed Rome 2 enough to go ahead and pre-order Total War Attila. I get free DLC anyway. Even if launch is bad (or not), I'll still enjoy the hell out of it :D I did with Rome 2 (even at launch), and this looks even better.

I noticed not many talking about it, and release is coming up pretty soon.

Looking forward to it? What faction do you think you may play first?

Me, so much eastern roman empire...:D though from my understanding, western/eastern roman empires will go into civil war and I'll be losing A LOT of land early on. Still sounds fun.

For me, I'm a bit torn. I absolutely adore the setting, and it certainly seems an improvement over Rome 2 (which I also enjoyed a lot). But from what I've seen of the battles, they are way too fast and arcadey for my tastes (thank R2TR for spoiling me), which really takes away from what I enjoy the most in Total War. I might have to wait for mods to come out.

As for factions, probably the Franks or Saxons, maybe the Danes or Jutes if I get the DLC.

I'm sort of looking forward to it. I'm not sure I can run it (even I ran F2f just fine) but I to want to pre-order it so I can play as my people for free. I didn't like the "special" troops the Geats get though. Not very special. Not nearly as OP as they should've been either :P

I'm also a bit sad the Islandlanders weren't included. They may be a bunch of inbred potatolovin cannibal hicks today, but they had their golden age during roughly this period.

That lip-sync in the announcement trailer was pretty bad. :P

The setting is pretty much in one of my favorite eras. So that is huge a bonus for me. The era of the fall of the roman empire, all the way through the crusading/jihad era (medieval) is a really interesting time period to me.

But yeah, battles seem fast from what I saw. They were in Rome 2 if I recall as well, but I got mod(s) to tone the battle speed down a lot and it was a lot more epic.

I haven't enjoyed a TW game since Empire. They've started to feel very dumbed down.

I'm a bit excited as Rome 2, after a number of updates, turned out to be my favorite Total War game. That said, there's no way in hell I'm pre-ordering after how much I hated Shogun 2 and how bad Rome 2's release was. They're going to have to prove they didn't drop the ball before I'm willing to hand them money.

Have the newer Total War games been casualized ? Because if they are, casualization is the death of Total War and I am sticking to M2:TW. (I never played anything else than this one, to be honest)

Also, Total War Ghenghis Khan needs to be a thing.

I suppose you'd have to define casualization first as it seems like a rather vague and broad word.

Simplifying the mechanics of a game and/or reducing the depth of gameplay and "what variety of things can you do with this game".

I wouldn't call it casualised, which is a pretty damn vague term anyway. The newer installments are definitely not casual, and they are harder than Medieval 2 and Rome (which were pretty easy, really).

Arcadey would probably be a better word. The battles happen quite fast, and it doesn't really have the feel of a real battle. There's not much point in going for the historical formations, and the AI is a dumb-as-bricks as it always is (probably why the game is arcadey to begin with). All this, apart from the AI, can be solved by mods (I prefer R2TR).

The campaign is pretty good, though, and vastly more detailed and accurate than, say, the original Rome, which had all of Gaul as one faction and Egypt (just. . . Egypt).

Edit: Ninjad

In that sense, no. The game is arcadey, yes, but the mechanics have definitely not been simplified or lost depth. The formula has been changed, some things were made less of a pain (army management and recruiting), some things were cut (family trees and characters with character :( ), and quite a few things were added (tech progression), but it's still a Total War game.

I would say the total war series have become extremely stagnant. ESPECIALLY THE AI. How can you NOT improve an Ai in 10 years time to actually put up some resistance, RTW 2's ai was actually worse than the first RTW.

Well, the current Rome 2 seems a lot better than Rome 1 (comparing vanilla vs vanilla)...or at least more challenging/balanced. Or maybe the units are better balanced.

I could literally beat rome 1 AI with one heavy cavalry general. On hardest difficulty.

One general, 50 or whatever men...low amount.
Over 10k enemy troops attacking my city...
I leave the gate with the general and go on to route over 10k enemy troops
He goes to route ANOTHER heavy cavalry general about mid-battle...further helping route others (but he already killed/routed 5k troops at this point)

And...I haven't played since lol. But that was AFTER all the patches and stuff were done with. Leave on a high note :P

(edit: Granted, having said that...elephants seem pretty OP in vanilla. I can pretty much do the same with elephants. At least thats fixed with mods.)

I think what I'm looking most to Attila is mods. :P

I think I'll be happy with Emperor Edition with all the DLCs snagged from steam sales for a while. I'll get Attila when it is on sale and/or after most DLCs are out. Of course I'm curious to see how they've improved the core concept and if they've just simplified it yet again. I think the best change in TW series so far is automatic reinforcing of armies. It was a huge micromanagement mess to march depleted armies back to provinces capable of training them, then retrain all units by hand. Now that I'm used to the automatic reinforcements (in since Empire?) I can't really play MTW II anymore. That is a shame, since it has many excellent mods.
