You must be really lucky.
My squad of 4 legendary marksdorfs spent days to kill a single trapped FB.

Yeah, bit of a pathetic FB all around. It appeared in the stairway was hit by a hail of bolts, then a passing fisherdwarf punched it in the body which exploded into gore.

you don't understand. They are training in the range fine. They just won't use their crossbows in actual combat. I told him to attack a hippo, and he just went and punched it a lot.

Did the guy actually have a crossbow? Cause see the points made: Sometimes you might've thought you remembered something but didn't. They either
A. Don't have combat ammo,
B. Ditched thier quiver trying to get a more valuable one and didn't get to it yet (be it due to bin or being issued an order which they won't ignore unless you deactivate them, or
C. They dropped thier crossbow for whatever reason (most likely for one of a preferred material or simply worth more dorf monies,) and hadn't gotten one yet.

And then without any of the above, Urist McShootsalot becomes Urist McFacepuncher, which may or may not work out.

That is strange. When my marksdorfs run out of ammo, they usually hammer the enemy with their crossbows.
(Maybe they have high striking skills?)

Go to [v]iew unit and check the dwarf in questions inventory, do they have their crossbow in hand? Does their quiver have bolts in it ([enter] on the quiver and you'll get a better view of what's inside it)? If you haven't activated them they won't pick up their equipment, and if you leave "individual choice ranged" as their weapon they sometimes have trouble with dropping it the moment a slightly more valuable crossbow becomes available...

I've had a fair number of challenges with ranged soldiers, but it seems like checking their inventory and the military screen can resolve most of them...

Oh, a side note.
Sometimes you need to disable mining, hunting and wood cutting jobs.

Backpacks? What?
And he's my doctor/broker, so no mining/woodcutting skills.
And yes, I've made 2 wooden crossbows out of a bowers shop.

I think you mean quivers.

Wait, why are you sending your doctor/broker onto the battlefield? He sounds a little too important to be throwing out on the front lines...

Also, don't forget the quivers, you make them out of leather at a leatherworks. Backpacks are just for carrying food onto patrol, it generally isn't vital to your military unless you want to keep your soldiers stationed for a few seasons... Oh and hunting has a uniform too, so if they are dropping their equipment when taken off duty that may be a reason...

If you're using kill orders to make your soldiers move that may be the problem, they tend to leap first, shoot second if they are just told to kill something as opposed to being stationed...

I've been admiring a few excellent bows we just bought from the merchants (we had a total surplus of purchasing power, and the bows and arrows were right there, so I bought them. No one seems to want to use them, even when I assigned a few dorfs to learning how to use the things, but I thought it would be a fun role play to have a bow wielding fort. I guess I need a lot more arrows... I figure I'll just make a crossbow squad till I can find a good reliable source of more arrows.

Bows and arrows?!?! what are you, an elf!  A proper dwarf uses a crossbow and bolts!  Or an axe.

Kids these days.... ;)

I am only trying to get my doctor to kill this wounded hippo my dog attacked so that it stops eating my pets/dwarves. IT's still the first season.

Dwarves will train at archery ranges when in active training.
Dwarves will also train at an archery range when they are off duty.

You must assign the squad to train at the archery range. when you create the range make sure there is a T on the squad that is the crossbow squad.

Dwarves that are not part of the current training will perform individual combat training in the message window. Also assigning too many dwarves in the traning schdule will also muck things up. I always make the minimum dwarves needed to train 2 less then the current squad size. This insures that if some of them are sleeping then they will still start the training.
