I found toady's definition on how to "win" DF
« on: January 30, 2015, 05:05:56 am »

in google news i put "tarn adams" into the searchbar to see if he had got any media attention. I followed some links and found "interview with the maker of Dwarf fortress" or something similar

Toady said: "If you get bored, you win, this is why losing is fun is the games motto"

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/131954/interview_the_making_of_dwarf_.php
for some reason, the site loads really slowly

so now theres 2 ways to win DF, to lose so spectacularly that forumites declare you've won, or to become bored

If that's the case, I'm probably the best player around.

People that are bored with DF lack creativity. And even if the base game would be too easy after a while, there are always mods. ;)

Aye. It takes enough gumption to get out of bed and be a college student. I can dream up a hundred fortress designs during MATH, but actually doing anything about them is a flying bronze carp of a different colour. ( Because it's coated in molten lead, you see. )

Like any mod ;) (Although I have to note that among all the negative feedback that I've gotten over the years, boring has never been one of them)

This is true. Your mod is a pain in the ass, but anyone who doesn't find Magitek, spontaneous combustion, and improved frame rate fun needs to back out of this thread slowly.

The only winning move is to not play: Losing is Inevitable. Therefore:

Choose not to play, and you are in a state of equally losing and winning (failure to play is avoiding failure).
Choose to play, and you are still in a state of equally losing and winning (playing is victory, but implicates losing).

Quantum winstates?

So, you're both winning and losing until you actually lose?

No, no, the only way to win the game is to lose so spectacularly the Bay12 community declares you have won.

Or achieve pinnacles of dwarven engineering alone. (See: Sphalerite) Your choice.

So, you're both winning and losing until you actually lose?

Yes and no: "losing is fun"; therefore, you do, in a sense, ultimately win when you ultimately lose.

Yes and no: "losing is fun"; therefore, you do, in a sense, ultimately win when you ultimately lose.

So, in conclusion, the mere existence, or maybe the knowledge of the existence of the game is enough to put you in the state of continuous winning and losing. The "amount" of winning and losing may vary, up to the point of "ultimate win and loss", but in the end, the paradoxical statement remains.

Yep, Dwarf Fortress defies common sense just by being a thought. Sounds about right.
