Not sure if bug or new gameplay.
« on: January 30, 2015, 01:54:22 am »

OK, I don't know if this is a bug or a new aspect of the update I'm not aware of but I've just started new fort (like really new, no doors or anything) and I can't place beds. I get a thing saying No Access To Bed whenever I try and the indicator goes purple. If I try on the first Z level (the one with my caravan etc) I can place it but this area is vulnerable and I want them to sleep a few levels below ground. But even one z-level down is a no go. Is there something I'm missing here?

Maybe some bad stairways?

It's been a while since I've played and I'm somewhat rusty. What would you recommend?

Well I haven't seen your map so I'm not sure.
But maybe you have dug a wrong stairway so the level is not accessable.

I suppose your beds are in the first picture?
I don't see anything abnormal except your have ramps under stairways.

Are you sure your miners can reach the carpenters? You can do a quick check by having them dig near the carpenter's workshop.

Hmm, the ramp was meant to be my first set of upwards stairs, maybe something cocked up.

Nope, fixed the ramps and still nothing.

What about your miners? Can they dig near the workshops?

Also find your beds first, are they really in the workshops or somewhere else?

OK, I put my beds in a little stock pile in the first z level, i have two. And what did you mean with the miners? It's been a while and I'm still something of a noob in any case

It looks like you intend to feed about 10000 dorfs, with a serious food over production.

However, utunnels recommends you to designate a tile for digging at the first level to see if the miners are capable of walking there.

I fail to see anything obviously wrong, but I'd try to designate bed building on each level, starting from the top, to see where it fails. There should be something wrong with the access to that level from above, and the miner test should also indicate they can't get up there, for some reason.

The miners seem quite capable of moving around, and bed placement fails at the very next z level after my farms. Starting to think I should scrap this fort entirely. Made a few glaring rookie mistakes besides whatevers messing with the beds.

Maybe you can construct a new bed in your workshop.

Issue fixed! The problem was the ramps must have been angled in such a way the dorfs couldn't get past them, then when I removed them I just made it worse! I floored it over.

There seems to some sort of bug with ramps and pathing.  I used to want to have a spiral ramp into my fortress, nice and broad for wagons to come to the trade depot, deep under ground and inside a walled courtyard.   II used a central stairwell to access the levels directly, and when I shut off the central stairwell, I would get job cancellation spam like crazy, and the depot would be unaccessible.   I also remember that people doing reclaims on mountainhomes would have trouble with the central shaft lined with a ramp and pathing issues.
