Peach pits and other worthless seeds
« on: January 29, 2015, 06:07:26 pm »

Benefited tremendously from a natural orchid of peach trees but i'm now overflowing on peach pits. I can't seem to find a use for them, is there one? Can i dump these in a refuse pile and will that result in them disintegrating after some time?

They currently have no use, atom smash them.

Either that or magma.

You can do some !!scienc!!, but I recall I saw seeds stayed in refuse stockpile for a long time. It is not a big deal whether you smash them or not, you only need 1 tile of garbage dumping zone to store them.

In a game where FPS death is a real issue, atom smashing is not an exploit, it's a necessity.

Yeah i was thinking this too. I don't want 10,000 peach pits sitting around anywhere on my map. Still the gameyness of building a massive dwarf sized nut-cracker to atomize them into dust is just not cool, wish there was some legit way without the reals of reality to dispose of them without inseminating the blood of Armok with the contaminant.

Apparently(NOT A FEATURE DWARF FORTRESS) you can make jelly out of peach pits http://www.savvyeat.com/peach-pit-jelly/ so they could have some realistic culinary applications.

Would be nice if you could feed these to avian livestock accelerate egg production.

Well hauling 10000 pits will probably take a long time.

Shouldn't the number of pits peak at 200? They are a kind of seed, and unless you modify the numbers, only up to 200 of each kind are stored (and 3000 total, I think).
I don't consider an atom smasher for junk disposal to be exploiting, but if you think otherwise, I'd recommend dumping into magma.

1. Dig a hole all the way to HFS
2. Dump the seeds down the HFS pit
3. ???
4.profit?

Atomsmashing isn't an exploit. At all. It's just "hey I need to get rid of these things and I have no magma, wat do ?"

unless you use it to kill whole goblin sieges, in that case yes it is exploity.

I would only consider atom smashing garbage to be an exploit if you use DfHacks autodump commands.

Dump them right next to/on top of the trade depot and sell them to the elves. Not sure if you can sell seeds though.

Or put them into a coinstar, but that's even more exploity.

Is that safe, though?  IIRC the pits of stone fruit contain cyanide.

At a craft fair I once saw a little bird carved from a peach pit, and a quick google search reveals some rather nice little carvings from fruit stones.

http://www.shamey.com/pit/pit.htm

So that covers: peaches, apricots, plums, cherries, and olives.

Seeds can contain poisons but it's usually in trace amounts, so not enough to kill you. Appleseeds contain cyanide for example, but I've never heard of anyone dying due to chowing down on apple cores.

http://www.drgourmet.com/askdrgourmet/peachpits.shtml#.VMt2yS6WlnI

A 10 gram peach pits would contains ~9 milligrams of the cyanide compound found in fruit. But they use the same compound in anti-cancer treatments and administer up to 1500 milligrams/day without any problem. So you'd have to eat 1.66 kilos of raw peach pits to get 1 days worth of normal medical dosage of cyanide compounds (the compound failed to treat the cancer but that's not the point here ;D ).

Boiling actually removes cyanide from foods, making even highly cyanide toxic cassava completely edible (if not boiled, you die), and you'd have to boil the pits a lot to make them into jelly, so I'd say peach pit jelly is probably perfectly safe considering how much you'd have to eat even before it's cooked to be dangerous.
