Tawarochir: You're free to not respond to this if you don't want to of course if you're sincere in your desire to not argue.

Anyway.

A: I agree that customization has been stripped out. I just feel that it's a price that is sometimes worth paying for a smoother game.

B: 3.5 books are chocked full of references to settings, the annoying bit is that it's all over feats and classes (not really in spells though for some reason). In 4E my biggest issue in that way is that the way your powers work is fluffed too much, but at least it's generic. Other fluffing doesn't really matter since each class is a sorta isolated island onto itself that doesn't really need anything. In 3.5 you need to justify tons of different things, or specifically change/remove the fluff attached to your build.

C: I don't understand what you mean by realism when talking about D&D. It's not realistic ether way. To me it appears that you just want specific parts of your iron age super hero fantasy to be realistic as compared to other parts which you don't want to be realistic? I mean, the difference between -2 and -6 isn't even that much in a d20 system. It really seems like personal preference to me.

D: A level one fighter in 4E is going to have a little over 50% more hp then in 3.5, going to have slightly better armor, and is going to hit for the same amount, with the addendum of better accuracy or doing damage even when they miss or some other effect. In addition to having a couple of one shot moves that deal two too three times as much damage.

That battle isn't going to last much longer in 4E then compared to 3.5

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

You forgot to roll d20 for catching the football!

Now you've invited the wrath of DM, which takes form in rolling a d10000 on a chart of random magical effects that will now happen to you.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Alright, let's do this.

You've played an RPG before, right? Elder Scrolls or Final Fantasy, stuff like that?

Imagine playing that, but with other people, and you're acting out the character you're playing like in an improvised play. I've also heard it described as being sort of like "Playing some board game, like, say, Monopoly, but you're acting like a real estate agent while you play it."

D&D 3.5e: Have you ever wanted to piss off four people who are nominally your friends without playing a MOBA, regardless of who those four people are or how they like to play? This is the game for you!

D&D 4e: Do you despise asymmetric gameplay? Hate having to work to make your terrible character idea keep up with better ones? Like to carry the weight of an entire campaign on the back of your ability to roleplay sans interesting characters, plot, or setting? This is the game for you!

D&D 5e: Want to piss off people too cheap to buy books instead of pirating them? This is the game for you?

--

Alternatively:

D&D 3.5e: Do you like being able to do absolutely anything except play a martial character who can contribute by doing things other than standing in front of the real people?

D&D 4e: Do you like to be bland and vanish in crowds -- not with super-rogue skills, but by genuinely being that boring and unremarkable?

D&D 5e: Do you like to piss off two sides of an argument at the same time but don't have time for American politics?
